I generated a sitemap from xml-sitemap.com, but it limits the URL number to 500. Pretty quickly I reached that number, now I need to create a new sitemap. I have an older website with nearly 1000 indexed url's. I tried to copy the sitemap.xml from the old site, copy the links from the new one and submit it, but the submission fails. I tried creating new sitemaps but they all fail to submit. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help. |

Most sites don't need a sitemap. If google cannot crawl your site effectively without one, your site has a problem. There are ways around the 500 limit. There may be free and paid generators that are available for more. They do it by splitting them up or something. I have never been a fan of sitemaps. Paul |

1) Create a master sitemap that only includes the URLs to the real sitemaps. 2) Create as many sitemaps as you want, include each sitemap url in the master sitemap (step #1 above). Here is a perfect example of a master xml sitemap, notice all the real sitemaps inside this xml file. http://www.metacafe.com/googleMRSSIndex.xml The above link is how large sites manage thousands of pages in their xml sitemaps. The above link also includes 478 xml sitemap URLs in their master sitemap. This way you only submit a single sitemap (master xml sitemap) to Google. | |

i have same problem when i m working on e commerce website, let me try using above discussion, will try @yukon tips, thanks yukon! The way you handle this is: 1) Create a master sitemap that only includes the URLs to the real sitemaps. 2) Create as many sitemaps as you want, include each sitemap url in the master sitemap (step #1 above). |

@ gamez4you So, 500 pages was the limitation of the tool or there was some issues with your website? The max number of urls in one xml file is 50,000 |

Many sitemap tools (plugins and programs) including e.g. A1 Sitemap Generator automatically split sitemaps for you when/if necessary. Strictly speaking the limit is 50k URLs in XML sitemaps protocol, but some may choose to split earlier than that. |

You can use a free tool called GSiteCrawler to automatically generate sitemaps (it will create more than one, if over the URL limit).

If you're running on wordpress you could just search for a plugin that will get the job done.
