Default Sticky Posts - Bad for SEO?

So I've been hearing that dupe content on the same site is not good for SEO. What if I just have a sticky post on the home page, but the post is still obviously elsewhere on the site?

Is that bad for my SEO?

I have never really experimented with sticky pages so I really have no idea...

Sticky post means you are moving that post to the top and fix it there. It will not result any duplicate post.

I have used sticky's to put my best converting posts on the homepage. I have not seen any noticeable drop or increase in my rankings.

It is sticky on the homepage... so it is on two different urls, making it duplicate.

I usually create a page and use that as a static page on the root of the domain. Then, I create posts and link to those in the sidebar. That's worked out a lot better for me than sticky posts, as it seems that a sticky post will still display the most current post beneath it, rather than just that one post.

No you won't have any problem with this. If you have multiple duplicates beyond 2 though that could create an issue.

Keep in mind that many blogs utilize some form of this, so Google wouldn't discount this.

In wordpress, depending on the theme, a full post could be duplicated at least 5 times - on the homepage, single.php, category.php, archive.php, tag.php

My rule is:

-Use an SEO plugin to set which pages should be no-index - OR

-edit the theme so that the different pages, display different things about the same post. For example, your tag pages can show the thumbnail and excerpt, while your archvie/category pages can show the Post Title only.

-For the homepage, I create a custom page and set it static. Use recent posts to display new entries. Your static homepage should target your main keyword since that's usually where most of your backlinks will go to. Any additional posts you make that also target the main keyword should link to the homepage.

There are tons of sites that do this as most blogs have some or all of the most recent posts on the home page. If you have a sticky post on the home page, I would set the actual URL to that page as a no-index so you wouldn't worry about duplicate content.

Thanks guys for all the replies!

Think I will use a static page for now on. I agree that it puts two posts, not just the sticky post... that's very annoying! Also, I'm having trouble getting my recent posts section to work on the sticky post, which probably hurts my bounce rate a good bit.
