Default Premium Domains Vs. Non-Premium Domains - Opinions?

Ok. I thought I would run some scenarios past you warriors to give me some guidance on premium domains vs non-premium domains.

I am at a point where I am going to be spending some coin on domain names and came up with 3 options but I am not sure which way to go. So please give your opinion as I know there must be others on this forum dealing with these issues.

I am doing CPA and want to create some sites that get more heavy natural traffic.
So I am looking at strategies of getting premium domain names that have a high exact US local search number. I have found a domain I like that fits this category but I am thinking of three options I could do.

So of the three options below what would you choose:

1. 1. Buy Premium domain that gets 3,600 exact term local searches for about $10-11K

2.Buy two domains for $8K and one gets 1,900 exact term local searches and the other gets 1,600 exact term local searches.

3. 3. Buy numerous domains for $500-$1,500 that get between 400-800 exact local term searches each.

Which one of the options above do you think is the best way to go. It is better to just have one site with very high exact local searches or is it better to have two or a bunch of smaller ones.

If you are just talking about a domain I definitely would do none of those. $1500 for 400-800 monthly searches?? How much money are you expecting a site like that to make?

Hi timeworks,

Premium domains are generic keyword domains that get significant type-in traffic. You seem to be referring to EMD (exact match domains) which are definitely NOT premium domains unless they meet the above criteria.

Based on your descriptions of those so called "premium" domains, they sound like they would be worth no more than a few hundred dollars, at best.

To clarify, I am talking about generic keyword domains that get significant type-in traffic when I am talking about premium domains. The type in traffic is what is attractive about the names.

Hi timeworks,

Thanks for clarifying.

How much type-in traffic and how much commercial intent for those generic keywords?

Those prices sound insanely high - save your money buddy. In this current climate a $10k domain should be much better then what you have described.

For the one premium domain, the type in traffic is 3,600 local US traffic as shown in the Adwords Keyword tool. The other stats are in the top of the thread. The generic keywords are in a competitive niche.

Type in domain traffic and search volume of a keyword are two very different things.

Hi timeworks,

Perhaps we have been using different terminology. The Adwords Keyword Tool does not show you type-in traffic for your domain, it only shows search queries for a particular keyword, or a group of keywords. The only place you can get the type-in traffic data from is the current domain owner, assuming they have the domain parked. The parking service will generally provide traffic statistics, including referral and type-in traffic.

The current domain owner should have earnings data available as well. The value of a premium domain is determined, in part, by the revenue earned from parking. The current earnings is considered the intrinsic value, while the potential earnings make up the speculative value.
