Main page not ranking?

Ok, so I built a site about a week ago and wrote a couple of articles on it. I did some backlinking to the main page and let it sit for a couple of days. I come back, and my main page is not even ranking in the top 1,000 but one of the articles I wrote is in position #39? I did absolutely no backlinking, pinging, or anything to that page but it is still ranking high?

Any theories on why this is happening or what I can do?

Your article rank high probably because the article directory is a well established site and your site have no ranking probably because its still new or you have not done your site optimization well.

This usually happend to my site, too. Try to build links to the homepage with the keyword as anchor text. After 1-3 weeks. The homepage will appear on google. Sometimes the google dance may cause innerpage rank instead of homepage.

Chances are the page that is ranking has more content relevant to the subject then the homepage. Especially if this is a new website with very little content/backlink building done to it.

If you want to be higher in articles sites then you need to search on high traffic keywords first.

You site is only a week old. There are still many things that you have to do for you to be able to bring your site on top.

I had a new site, it was weird because everytime it indexed a backlink, the rank would go down a lot for a day and then come back up higher than before
