What are your primary methods for bringing traffic to your website?

I was wondering what methods most people here are using to get website visitors. I figure making this thread could be useful for me and a lot of the other members of this forum. So, what are your primary methods for bringing traffic to your website?

Clarification: This thread is not intended for people to list all possible ways to get traffic, but rather for people to list the ways that their successfully using with their website(s).

blog commenting, link exchanges, forums posting. Recurring traffic is built with link building and some other solid methods such as viral traffic.

There are many ways to drive traffic, some of my favourites...

1. Article marketing.

2. Creating a search engine optimized site with proper silo and linking structure, backlink building, etc to get to the top of search engines.

3. Posting in forums and providing quality content.

4. Finding JV partners to promote my sales funnel.

I've found it very helpful to exchange banner for goods. For example I may sell xbox consoles. I would go to forums associated with xbox consoles and game discussion and contact its creator. In said e-mail i would mention my site, goals and anything relevant to sway him/her my way. In the banner I had designed for him/her there would be a promo code to enter at check out, for my site. Each code corresponds to a specific site which I keep track of. If the code from said site is used 'x' amount of times I send them a product or paypal equivalent to the value of the product. Small rewards for forum mods that have large amounts of traffic go a long way.

Twitter, Facebook, and search engine traffic. Twitter is a great tool to use if you get enough followers and continue to post good to content.

My best traffic comes from JV partners and from a space ad I run a few times a year in Investors Business Daily - the IBD add crushes every time I run it.

I'm trying to learn other methods of traffic generation, FB, PPV etc - but frankly it's hard for me to stay interested in them because what I'm doing now works so well.

I think that the best thing to do is just find something that fits you and go with it.

For the last 15 years or so, all I have been doing is write a few articles or mail off a few post cards. Maybe the odd solo ad here and there, perhaps pick up the phone every now and again, but that's about it. This system has always worked the best for all of my niches.

Looks like everyone is on the same page. I don't know why I expected to see more social media strategies being used. This being said there hasn't been many responses but I figure its because everyone would say the exact same thing.

Basically, make sure you are found everywhere. Running ads are costly make sure you choose the right website to place the ad first. I've had clients do this and totally bomb and spend $300 a month for 6 months and never get any leads.

link building works like magic. You can outsource this service so you don't spend too much time doing it. You need to do it daily in order to for it to give you good reuslts. Also get squidoo lenses, write articles and advertise your site. Post good comments on other people's blogs and leave your signature.

I'm not too big a fan of SEO, so I stick with other forms of marketing and the best traffic sources I've found come from solo ads since your obviously mailing to a large list of targeted people. I also like forum marketing since it's pretty easy to find your target audience in their as well. Especially if you know the right words to say to catch the attention of your audience. Video marketing isn't bad either although it takes a little while to generate views to your video, it's still pretty effective. So, in short, solo ads, forum marketing and video marketing.

it depends on your site's content. In some cases it is best to publish videos on youtube, in other you need to be active as possible on social networks...

However, in first line you need to get your site to first page (top 5) of google. Traffic will be constant this way.

Take my business, I sell pet food, a competetive keyword, the same can be said for cheap and discount pet food.

I started our by donin on page optimisation (content, meta, css, images, title and alts) I also added a bottom info scroller to the footer, added title's to these and the same to the header (without scroller)

The scroller has added related content with keywords. I then left the site for a few days, check my search results, from nowhere i was on page 4 for discount and cheap pet food.

I then went into off page, created a few articles, joined related forums and used facebook. I am now on the top of page 2 for discount, and middle of page 1 for cheap.

The domain was bought in april 2011, not bad, I dont have hundreds of backlinks, onyl a few good quality relevant links.

Being in the top 10 of the Search Engine Result Page is the best way, 90 percent of traffic comes from search engine, not somewhere else and I think there is no better way to create traffic.

Other than everybody suggested, for a quick traffic flow to your site, use PPC or buy ad space on sites within your niche. For this you need have you landing pages optimized and tested for bounce rate to get any benefit of this traffic.

I use a lot Youtube, metacafe, also JVs, blog... thats it.
