Private Blog Network topic is closed but I still have questions

I finished reading that whole thread, there were lots of great information from both sides, I want to thank all of you who participated in that debate.

Now I have a few question, I am sure it's simple for you gurus.

1. someone mentioned 50 blogs will already give some juice , ok, if I decide to build 50 sites, do they have to be in the same industry. For example money site is in computer hardware area, the blog network has to spread to multiple industry to look natural, or can they all in the same computer hardware area, but target different brand, like sony, samsung, apple....

2. because you don't link these 50 sites together, does it mean I have to build another few or many websites just to link to above network, how many would require on this second network.

3. once 50 sites are done, is it better to build more sites, or just maintain these 50 and keep improving prs on them?

My blog networks consist of aged domains with PR, and I just use the sites to post medium/low quality content like spun articles and stuff. And i use them for sidebar links for my money sites.

I have a large network with a few partners in total we have probably 50 or 60 sites.

We definitely notice boosts from the sidebar links, and then we trade spun content with a larger network as well, which keeps the sites active and gets us more links from all of the larger network as a whole.

It works well, none of our sites are related to any specific topic, but the links are still very effective.

besides aged domains/PR, do you backlink these sites?
