Do you look at Alexa ranking?

I wondered how many of you check Alexa rankings as you browse around and if you do, do you judge the site by their ranking? And if you do judge them by their ranking at what point do you say to yourself, "well this is high enough" and stop looking at it?

Short form of the question is: How high must a site be ranked for you to feel it's either safe or reputable?

My example is my site (see sig) it's just around 1.5 Million and slowly getting better but it's not a completed site yet it's just our pre-launch offer, so i can't really get traffic to stay very long, hence not going to move up very easily until we launch and that's fine. It's ranking is under 300k for US and under 90K AUS. In your minds are those ranks still miles off what you would trust when i do have a site? I'm just curious as i expect to drop easily once the traffic is able to stay on and use my service.

Interested to hear your opinions

I actually always do when i am buying an online software, or go to a forum etc to check their visitors and if it is worth hanging around or not.
But also when i check my competition for my niche i always check alexa to see how much visitors i can get.
I need alexa to be 1-a million.

I have glanced at it in the past but I don't think it is a requirement to ranking any site.

So you need them to be sub 1Million? It's quite interesting, I used to browse around with the Alexa toolbar so i'd always know and often it would explain why a site seems so poor.... it's because it was.

I pay no attention to Alexa, it is not really relevant and can be manipulated.

All it can measure (and apparently not accurately at all) is users of the Alexa toobar, most of whom are themselves internet marketers. Nothing about real traffic or potential customers at all.

Its only real relevance is for selling your site or selling advertising space on it, (because it's something in which potential puchasers - knowing no better - can be interested).

Alexa IS useful as a wild estimation of whether the site receives any significant traffic or not: not to gauge how much traffic, but if any decent traffic.

An Alexa rank is just one data point.

A profitable site might have an Alexa rank out in the tumbleweeds...say, 2.4 million or so...especially if the site's users aren't the type to install the Alexa toolbar.

In your travels, though, you will notice that Flippa listings have Alexa ranks disclosed, as will sites that sell ads. People do pay attention to it. If you think of your rank as incentive to improve your site, that can be a positive. If you obsess over it, though, it can deplete your energy.

I honestly don't pay to much attention to the actual ranking that Alexa gives. I focus instead on making sure my site has goog compelling design to support my message and that my Onpage SEO is airtight. After those two things are in order any Offpage SEO you perform will be much more valuable and return greater results.

But to actually answer your question about the only time I really use Alexa as a resource is when I'm tracking trends to find a profitable niche and then to pull the top queries from search traffic in that niche. That's about it. I say if you have a good site which is converting and making you money, which is really how you measure success in this or any business, then who cares how someone ranks you.

I check it.... One of the many little things you can use to make an educated guess about a website...

I wouldn't give it too much weight, but any little clues you can pick up will help you make an informed decision about a website....

Alexa itself is quite useful. If I run across a blog in my niche that has a lower Alexa ranking, I look at their links. I have no idea how Alexa chooses the links it shows on any site's page, but they are often from low-rank or authority sites. That tells me I want to get links from those pages, too.

It's something you should take into consideration...it's usually the one of the top 3 things I look at and as fluffy said...if they have a 2.4M ranking I'll dig further to see what the problem is and why they are so low and then make a decision from there...

Quite often around our office you'll hear someone yell out "They are a 3.4 ranking....they are nuthin'!"

This is what i thought i use the alexa toolbar so i don't have to go look a page up but it often helps when i search for a answer to a topic and end up at a XX,000,000 ranked site. So i have to wonder if the content will actually be reliable as they are either new or not getting very much traffic. I think most sites that are doing well enough will lower their ranks naturally and won't have to actually focus on doing so. Unless they are an IM'r that needs the site to look better than it may be.

I look at alexa regularly not because I take it for granted but I believe it is one of the measures for my website traffic and it does say something about where my website stand between others.

I do pay attention to it, but I don't rely on it as gospel, especially in non-IM niches.

Alexa gets it's data from those that have the toolbar installed, so if the website visitors don't have the toolbar installed, Alexa don't count them as a visit to put towards their Alexa score.

Of course yes, I always look at alexa rank every week to see the progress of my site; it has a poor algorithm of ranking new sites though but in the long run it adjusts proportionately. Some sites use alexa rank to value domains.

I do not think you can compare the two since they serve completely different purposes. While Alexa measures site traffic, Google Page Rank measures the authority of a web page as reflected by the quantity and quality of backlinks pointing to that web page.

In summary, both are important and the value of each to a user is only relative to the purpose/requirement of the user.

Alexa rank has its authority and there are no second thoughts but I sometimes overlook this and just check Google page rank of the site that I am visiting.

when I want a quick idea of how much traffic a site is getting I use Alexa. To see if a blog is getting good traffic for guest blogging for example. Less than 100K is best, more than 400K no way.

Sometimes I get good keyword ideas from their site reports and for link building I will check the top 100 sites overall then the top 100 in my niches to find places I can drop links or add content

Personally, I don't ever look at Alexa unless I'm not experienced with a KW and want to see what kind of demographics visit my potential competition so I know how to construct and voice content.

Otherwise, I just worry about who's on the first page of google, as that is who you're going to have to beat.
