Here is the reason why:

Some article marketing can take a while to get published

Forum posting can not be fasten

Web directories take about a month to six months to get links from well established directories.

Blog commenting takes a while to get approved, this also depend on the administrator checking and approving the comment.

Press release submission varies, some sites loves to proof read new entries before posting it to their database.

And so on and so forth.

When you are doing several methods you are steady back links.

It's not really how fast you build backlinks. What's more important is sustainability. If you build 10 backlinks a day, you need to keep building 10 every day. If you build 100 backlinks and you drop down to 10 then be prepared to experience the google dance a lot with your site.

I haven't found a single competitive serp where there are profile backlinks ranking anything high. Even for the old term "backlinks" the top half of that front page are using High Pr domains mixed in. A bunch of Articles and profile backlinks alone are not going to work for anything competitive.

To the OP - no doubt about quickest way is to get HIGH authority/PR links I have never placed those kinds of links to a site and not seen a noticeable and quick effect.

I think the question you need to ask is, what is the most effective link building strategy.

If you want the fastest strategy, just take a new domain, give someone USD 200 to do 10 Xrumer links and give your domains 100,000 links in a single day.

The problem with this approach is that you might get into a lot of trouble in terms of rankings, especially if you have a new website.

I also agree with the majority here, i.e. having a diverse linking portfolio with natural growth.

But, if you're looking for traffic this may not be the most effective...

For faster traction to your sites I would recommend you learn to "participate" (folksonomy). In other words, become a part of the on-going discussion surrounding your niche in various topical forums, yahoo answers, blogs (in the form of comments or guest posts) etc.

By the way, I'm not talking about spamming... I'm talking about actually contributing to these resources.

This approach will do a few things for you:

1. It will provide you with near immediate traffic
2. It will provide you with some links (from potentially relevant authority sites)
3. It can make you into a "celebrity" in the niche

The great thing about this is that you will start to get traffic independent of Google, AND not be adversely affected by the various Google updates.

Not necessarily. If the domain's old enough, Google might not see it as spam, and won't sandbox it. Now, granted, there's a difference between sending 100 links at a site and 5,000 links. Just don't go overboard.
