I have seen good results from directory submission recently just don't spend too much time or any money on it. Go for higher PR, relavent catagory, free directories.

I think diretory submission will help 'balance' your links if nothing else. You want a balance of links from articles, blog comments, profiles etc not all links from one medium.

I just tried a boostmyseo.com and I am well impressed. Submitted to 1000+ directories with about 20 seconds work.

Only directory submissions are useless. You should try others methods also like article submissions, bookmarking.

But try to submit your site on High Pr directories Sites.

Depends solely on your niche and keyword competition. For several of my adult content sites, guess how I ranked on page one?

High PageRank Directory links. That's it. One site I submitted to five directories, all with PR's over 5, received site-wide links out of a reciprocal agreement and my site ranked within a few days.

I've also done it with mainstream sites that have little to no competition. So they are not useless depending on what other tools you may need to rank.

Lol I was just asking a friend of mine who runs a VERY successful SEO company in Southern California the very same question. His response was that it is all part of a balanced breakfast.. I mean SEO strategy.. So Yes it does help, but I think what everyone else here is saying is that it can't be one of your only way of creating one way links. Along with my friend's answer came the comment that he has a team that submits every website to over 6,000 directories. So take it for what it's worth..

It is not useless. Good PR directories, helps to obtain high ranking results. But for approval it takes time. I think u not only depend on Directory submission but also do other off-page activities.
