Hey guys, I'm pretty new at this and need a little advice. I want to build a site and the domain is 2 words. The word1word2 .com is taken but the .net and .org are available. The word1-word2.com is available also. Which one would you recommend? Also which one would place high on google? Thanks

I'd take the .net or .org - no difference as far as I can tell with ranking. Sometimes just one sounds better than the other. I'd forget the variety with the dash in it. I'd also be looking at the original dot com, where it ranks, backlinks, site layout etc. I bet it's either a parked domain for sale or not ranking at all due to lack of commitment, in which case, I'd be wondering about the amount of traffic for this keyword? |

I would ideally go for a .com if you want to use the site long-term and you want to make it brandable. If you are just using the site primarily for its SEO value, .org and .net are pretty much the same. I have many .org and .net exact match domains ranking high in the SERPs so you should do fine with them as well. |

Well if it's got a buyer product or service at the end of it and is getting 5000 searches per month, I'd evaluate the top 5 and if it looks OK I'd go with the .net or .org. Either of them will rank if you add decent content and get some decent backlinks. Forget buying the .com - you don't need it to rank.

If you're only looking at SEO and monetizing the site, who cares. If the other domain is just parked and not developed, you should no problem out ranking it.

I'll go for .org or .net, it doesn't matter if the site is well optimized. You don't need to spend money to buy the .com domain.

Id certainly agree that the .net and .org domains are just as good as the .com. In fact some of my .net domains regularly outrank the .com's for my keywords everything else being even. Keith Baxter actually ranks .net before .com's and .orgs so thats an extra reason to consider buying a .net. |

Quite often when people need to commit the address of a website to memory, they will not remember the dot net and the first place they will check is the given address with a dot com ending. Many times when they do not find it there, they will hardly ever think of using dot net to repeat the search. That is a lost visitor and maybe even potential client.

i prefer .com domain extension because most people get familiarized with this word when talking about website. though .net is not a bad choice and this can also have a good ranking in search engine

Personally, I don't think there is much of a difference unless you are going for branding. In which case, it makes a world of difference. Also, if the term in the domain is a high searched for term, the .net may lose out in terms of direct traffic (meaning people who go to the website by typing into the address bar) |

I am also agreeing with Barbrine comment. If you do good SEO and publicity to your blog; even it is .net or .org they will do well.

.com is easier to remember, but visitors often only remember what they see frequently, so choose a .net and do your best to catch up.

word1-word2.com is best because it is my personal experience to rank the domain with this extension.

My advice is go for dot com, if you have the option of adding somthing at the end of word1 and word 2 or changing you word then do it because it looks like you are building an authority site.

If you have no other issues as to how which domain sounds then you should probably take the one that is ranking better. If that is also not a problem then take your choice that fits into your budget. As far as ranking goes and SEO is concerned no site has more priority over the other except from the fact as the site's On Page factors are concerned.
