So I've found a keyword with 4400 exact searches a month but the problem is: number one spot is a pr4 page with 500 links to the page, however it doesnt mention my keyword phrase once... number two spot is a wikihow, but once again, it doesn't mention the exact keyword phrase once in fact, the top 5 spaces look like big websites, but don't have the keyword phrase words in the right order. Is this a good keyword? |

I personally go for keywords above 30k. But if you so all the SEO basics, you can rank on top with that particular keyword since noone else is ranking for that particular one

wouldn't 30k exact searches a month be extremely competitive? Will I rank easily? or will I need a ton of backlinks and content? |

I wouldn't judge the competition based on the number of links to the page, and the on-page factors alone. Check to see what's going on with the back links as that can significantly influence the rankings and even though they may not be optimized on page for the exact phrase, they make have some quality links with that exact anchor text. So make sure to analyze the competitions links thoroughly before concluding that it's too competitive or not. For all you know it may not even be that competitive. And I wouldn't worry too much about page rank either. It doesn't have much to do with ranking. And don't place too much emphasis either on the number of links they have to the page. Focus on what's going on the page, and off-page factors. Use a tool like opensiteexplorer.org to check their page authority, domain authority and what else is going on behind the scenes. |

It seems like you have a good basis for understanding and judging competition: the main question is whether or not this competitor is specifically SEOing for the keyword you're considering. Look at their backlinks and see if they're just random links, or backlinks targeting this keyword you're considering.
