My question is mentioned in the title already. I am really very poor on this competitor research. However now I check...... 1) PR of competitors 2) How many backlinks are working for the site according to Yahoo site explorer and scrapebox. 3) Domain age 4) Alexa rank (not sure importantance of this nowadays) 5) yahoo directory submission (for yahoo optimization) 6) On-page factors like... a) keyword in domain b) keyword in title c) Keyword in Header 1, 2 and 3 d) Keyword density e) Keyword in very first sentence and very last sentence. f) Outbound links to relevant webpages g) Sitemap Thats all. Can warriors add more?? Just want to improve on this field. any advice, links, ebook etc. will be consider as a great help............ |

Most important one for me is the quality of their backlinks in terms of PR and anchor text. You can match them for the majority of on-site SEO, if you can nail them on backlinking as well then you'll outrank them.

As said above, probably more important than anything would be sources/quality of backlinks and the anchor text(s) used.

How can I check amount of quality backlinks? Its easy to check backlinks if there are total 300 backlinks but it will be impossible if there are 3 million backlinks! Is there any software that can check how many quality backlinks are passing link juice to the page and the url of those backlinks?

Just load up the site and check the backlinks of it, after that extract the URLs and check the PR on them. If the site has more than 1,000 backlinks (Yahoo Site Explorers limit) then you have 2 options. 1. If the "page" is ranking rather than the homepage you can check the links PR of that specific page. 2. If its the homepage but you want to check all of its internal links to then you will need to get all the URLs of the site and then check the links of those URLs. After getting the links of all the urls on the site then you'll want to check the PR of those pages.

Scrapebox can check amount of backlinks and pr of these easily. But how can I check other most important factors.... 1) relevant backlinks 2) anchor texts used 3) age of backlinks |

I check whether they use 'u' and 'ur' instead of 'you' and 'your' - that's a clear sign of amateurism to me - I know I can beat them easily then.

Domain age, PR On-site factors and the most important - the website itself, usually beating them with better content and user-friendliness plays a big role |

Oh another thing is site download time... @SEObirk yeah. content is the king. but now I think how many visitors are visiting the site everyday, bounce rate, no. of new visitors etc. can be good factors. Nobody knows how many and what factors google consider. But from our experience we can understand at least some of them. In near future I wish I will be able to create list of the factors. And hope will be able to share with all of u... |

I definitely agree on the quality of their links. Huge deal and in many cases, you can get links from the same places (if they're highly ranked directories or other category based listing websites). One of the other things I look for is whether or not they REALLY have a grasp on the fact that there is more they can do to rank well in the engines. What would indicate that is their consistent activity around what they're doing. That could be blogging, interacting with a lot of people on the web and in social (which breeds links if you're doing it right and have killer content), and continuing to move up in the engines. That implies they're smart, and if they're smart, now you have an actual competitor, as opposed to some business owner or website owner who paid someone else to do their SEO, and it wasn't fully thought through or extremely effective. Hope that helps! Great answer so far from everyone. |

For research on competitors I ususally check how they have done their On Page SEO, I then do my own and compare again. After that is just a matter of how much you put effort in building quality backlinks. |

The bottom point is, all factors must be considered. Checking all the resources of your competitors is a good way of analyzing your competitor's ranking.
