For researching competitors and finding good high and low competititve keywords - semrush is the best.

SENuke is probably the best seo software like edwin101 said. I've had a lot of success using EVO II Pro but you have to be careful how many times you run it in short periods of time (like most seo softwares)

For research these are good - Traffic Travis, Market Samurai, SEM Rush

For building links - Build My Rank, Article Marketing Robot, LinxBoss, SE Nuke and SEO Link Robot.

Definitely recommend Build My Rank for link building. For finding other potential link opportunities, using tools like SEO Spyglass and Market Samurai can really help. Run the top rankings sites in your niche through these tools and analyze their backlinks. This is a good way to get high quality links without a lot of effort.

Senukex is best tool to dominate ranking if you use it wisely. I am building campaigns using SenukeX with great success and a lot of ease. However there is a learning curve of Senukex which you must learn before practically implementing SenukeX to your money site.

I've been using Market Samurai for a while... I really like it, and their tutorials are pretty great. However, it can be clunky until you get the hang of it all.

I use a combination of tools just like Jack.

But SEnuke is usually core in all my campaigns. One really important feature is the Project Linking / Diagram Designer. Here you can define your exact promotion strategy.

For research, definitely Market Samurai.

I've used pretty much all SEO softwares out there, and whilst yes some do make your job easier, now days I just take a good ole look at page 1, and within 3 seconds I can get a pretty good feel for how competitive a keyword is and how many links it will require just by seeing the type of sites/pages showing there. If I spot an opportunity that's when I dig deeper with the softwares to get an detailed reading.
