I have a website which is ranking just ok for local search. If I add an EMD and point it to the site would it help or would the site have to be built on that domain. I see much of my competition is using exact match domains and ranking on page one. The quality and quantity of our content is similar. Can we use multiple exact mach domains and point them all to the main website? Please explain |

There's no SEO benefit to forwarding domains unless you build backlinks to the domains, or want easy type in traffic from business cards or something. Plus, you would then have to spend more time doing things for more domains. Instead of obliterating a site and changing the domain, you should just start another site, different domain, same niche. Then once this new site is ready for the world, put a link on your current site up at the top of the page, notifying people of the new site. You want to leave the old site intact, as you would really be starting from scratch if you changed the domain name. People will suggest a 301 from the old domain to new, but that still basically obliterates the old site. Not a good idea. Use the old site to send traffic and build authority to the new one. If it was me, I would not even worry about changing the domain, but tweaking the titles, descriptions, <h1>'s, and content, as well as getting more contextual backlinks. Paul |

301'ing an EMD onto your current site wont do anything. EMD will be lost. All you 301 will be the links, and you wont have any links if you just reg and 301 redirect, so it will be pointless. Other option is to put EMD on different host with different whois. Domain privacy like use DomainsByProxy (GoDaddy) or your own details on one site, and WhoisGuard (namecheap) on the other. put them on different hosts. Rank the EMD in its own right with small site and link it to your main site, then backlink the EMD too. | |

In the distant past, I had success with 301'ing an EMD and seeing some better results, but I think Google has since clamped down on the benefits of it. This would be what I would suggest. |

Links to forwarding domains only work if they also have your link on their site, so a 301 redirect would only tell the SE that the old site has moved from the old domain to the new one, and you would be stuck with the new domain without much to show for your troubles. If I was in your shoes I would think of adding some content to my site and increasing the number of header tags and anchor texts.
