Default Google Top 10 Confusion

After selecting my keyword I type it into Google to compare the top 10 and I'm very confused about the results I'm getting.

The top 3 are retailers...

4 is an about.com

5-9 are retailers...

and 10 is an EMD.info with a PR1 and 98 Yahoo Page Links

the EMD.com isn't even on the top 3 pages

During a lot of my keyword research I often find wikipedia, retailers (i.e. amazon, sears, or some specific retailer), youtube videos all in the top 10.

Is there a reason an EMD.info or EMD.com wouldn't rank higher? Their on page SEO and links look good to me.

I'm considering the EMD.net, but not sure if it's worth it because of all the retailers on top.

Any thoughts?

if you think you can make money with that keyword, just grab the domain and start working on it. Those big ass retailers are usually just pages that rely on domain trust to rank. Eventually youll be able to beat them

good luck!

Good question though, why doesn't the EMD.com rank higher? Most likely the owner gave up on it - did a bit of linkbuilding but wasn't consistent and it slipped down the rankings, or never made p1 in the first place. Low-quality links and infrequent updating of content could also be a factor. Possibly it has a high bounce rate too. All things to avoid with your site in any case

Markowe is probably right about people giving up on these - I have seen loads of EMD.coms that people have bought, added a tiny amount of content and then done nothing else to them - and not surprisingly they are on page 10, or somewhere like that.

Also, maybe the EMD.info has more (high quality) backlinks than the EMD.com

Hello! :)

Hey onepace,

I presume your site is not in google's first page for whatever keyword you are trying to rank.
If you have a right strategy with right resources and tools you can beat the wikepedias, about.coms,EMDs,etc authoritative sites. The only factor you have to worry is time.People tend to loose patience as it takes some long time rank for tougher keywords that were occupied by authoritative sites.
As I've said,it can be done.

I think your site is not on Google 1st page for whatever keyword you want to rank. There are many reasons not to rank the site on 1st page of google like
may be your site is new one. No. of backlinks may be less as compared to competitor.
So, you should do the competitor analysis perfectly which helps you to rank the site.
