For example some articles are getting 20 relevant backlinks and some others are getting more than 1000 backlinks from that particular article directory automatically. That mean you have to do nothing to get those backlinks and those are all from that domain, i.e more exposure.

I think that ezinearticles still offers the best syndication rate, provided that the articles is syndication worthy. I am not aware of any article directory that would actively build links to your article, apart form sending out RSS feeds or have some automated social media integration. We do build links to some articles in our article directory, but that is unofficially, so I suppose some other smaller article directories would do the same. It is just not sustainable in big article directories that have thousand of submission every day, so the authors themselves usually build some links to their articles to get them rank better in the search engines.

But when you choose an article directory you should always look that they have made article syndication easy for the possible syndicators and they have ezine ready article, plane text version and html version of the article ready so it can be easily copied. I have noticed that some of the article directories don’t have any of that but that is quite important if you want to get your article out there.
