Default PPC question -- is this possible?!?!...

In my never-ending research into domain names, etc. I find exact match names, then see the traffic estimator + competition + PPC prices.

Yesterday, one such nugget REALLY stood out from ALL the others (I've been doing this research for many months!).

Google traffic estimator said the price for this KW term (3 words) was........

$321.68 PER CLICK

Is that possible?!?! Or is it some kind of error?

I've seen other terms that have very expensive PPC costs -- but never any anywhere NEAR THAT high!!

Please advise.

Thanks!

-- TW

>>>> UPDATE --
I redid the "test" on this -- now I'm more confused! Yesterday, it said...

[3 word key word] 91 -- 46 -- $321.68

TODAY, SAME KW says...

91 --- 46 -- $0.00

CONVERSELY -- another (4 word) KW said THIS yesterday...

480 -- 58 -- $5.38

and today, SAME 4-word KW says this...

480 -- 58 --- $220.96

How can the estimated bid price vary SO MUCH, from just one day to the next???

I hereby announce my first-ever WSO!...

It's an error. No one is paying that much per click.

Hi TimothyW,

The AdWords Traffic Estimator shows you estimated daily costs based on your maximum CPC. Are you sure you are not looking at the daily cost?

I think you are using the wrong tool for the type of research that you are trying to do. Try the Contextual Targeting Tool instead!

No. Definitely was (is) "Estimated Avg. CPC"

Ran the tests again -- now all results are different -- but still some are very high...

$167.30 -
$141.76
$131.86
$217.55
$147.56
$120.54

(per click)

So... A) How could these #'s be so high?, and B) how come they keep changing (WILDLY) from day to day? By varying wildly, I mean from $321.00 one day, to $Zero, the next day

or from $5.00 one day, to $220.00 the next day!

Seems like you're either reading it wrong or it's some sort of error.

I tried a few dozen high competition keywords and I'm not able to duplicate your results. Can you give a specific example keyword where you are seeing those 3 digit average CPCs?

Note: I blacked out the specific KW's cuz I want to keep them private right now -- but I assure you that is the results I'm seeing. There's a group of about 100-200 KWs in that one niche. When I run them (100 at a time), 5-6 of them show those high $ amounts. Weird thing is, every time I run the test, it turns out the high #ed ones are DIFFERENT KWs each time (!). The next day results are all different, but still with 5-6 different ones showing those high #'s.

Odd, yes?

Yes, definitely unusual, but I have seen folks deliberately bid like that to aggressively garner a #1 position. Their thinking is that no one would dare match their bid and they always end up paying just 1 penny above the 2nd highest bidder. Since it sounds like these keywords are related or in the same industry niche it could be just such a case.

As I alluded to in an early post, you might fair better using the Contextual Targeting Tool

Hi Affiguy,

That's exactly what those that dare bid that high believe. They believe no one would ever bid that high, which guarantees them a #1 position for just 1 penny more than the second highest bidder (assuming they have a high QS).

So you're saying the bid shown by the tool is not what is ACTUALLY being paid. But why do the results keep CHANGING from day to day? Not just the amounts, but WHICH KWs those prices are attached to -- THAT changes from day to day too!

KW "A" on day #1 = $.05
KW "B" on day #1 = $212.00

KW "A" on day #2 = $177.00
KW "B" on day #2 = $0.68

???
