Default Did I choose a bad keyword? Help!

EDIT: I removed my keyword from the post. It seems like a bad idea to give away my niche!

Hey everyone. I just started in internet marketing, niche sites specifically, about a week ago, and I think I might have chosen a bad keyword. I was hoping I could just post the details about my keyword/site here and see what people think. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to post the link, so I will avoid that for now and just talk about the site itself.

So the keyword I chose was "[Removed]. I did a bunch of research and narrowed it down to this field, because it seemed like the competition wasn't too terrible and I could get myself ranked if I did the proper backlinking manually, since this is my first ever niche site (There is a lot to do and a lot to take in, but I think (i.e. hope) I'm on the right track).

I built my site with original content on beginner [Removed] tips, project ideas, tools required etc etc. Now that it is up and running, indexed by Google, etc. I started to set up some links, but now that I look, all the sites in the top of Google for this keyword are businesses that actually DO the work for you. My site is designed to help the new aspiring beginner do it themselves.

Does this mean that my site is targeting the wrong audience for this keyword? Should I copy/paste all my content to a URL closer to a keyword such as "beginning [Removed]"?

ANY advice would be a huge help, like I said this is my first attempt, and I want to optimize as much as I can.

Thanks in advance!

I would not go that far. The keyword you focus on is only one of the many.If you want success in seo you have to use many more keywords if you are to see any results. From my opinion your keyword is not so bad and is targeted. However you may find yourself getting traffic from both categories..

No
I think your keyword is fine. Are you using it to capture leads to a news letter?

You want to develop some sort a rapport with them on your news letter because they will be looking for guides, tool, etc that you can recommend to them.

Good content will help you but an email list will help you develop further with them

Well I just finished posting the site a few days ago, so I don't have any traffic yet. I mainly wanted to make sure that it was reasonable before I put a large amount of effort into backlinking, etc to try and get ANY traffic.

Along those lines, I haven't even began thinking along the lines of a newsletter yet. I would imagine that I need to get a good amount of traffic before I would be able to get any subscribers/worry about an email list. I haven't looked into it either so I would have to research strategies for something like that.

To be honest, the advice I had found for niche sites was to put up 5-7 basic posts with some decent content and get your name out there. Once it was ranked, let it sit there and get adsense/affiliate revenue. In other words, get it up, get it ranked, and then barely ever worry about maintaining it. Is this a bad strategy?

P.S. Am I allowed to post my link for critiquing purposes? And is it a bad idea to expose my keyword like I did? Maybe I should remove it for competition purposes.

I guess there is a secondary question then. In your personal experiences, do you find it better to have a small amount of content rich, high maintenance sites? Or do you prefer a larger amount of highly targeted, small niche, low content/upkeep sites?
