Default Traffic Spike Before Ranking Drop?

Does anyone have any experience with sites that see a significant spike in traffic right before going into the toilet?

I'm working on a relatively new site right now that saw a consistent 900 or so impressions per day for a month or two (according to GWMT) spike to 1500 on the 24th to 2500 on the 25th. I'm certain its gone higher since but that's the most recent date showing in GWMT. I was one page 1 for virtually every targeted keyword.

However, tonight, traffic fell off a cliff and I noticed that I was no longer ranking for anything. Although I'm still indexed, traffic/ranking is non-existent.

Now, I've seen this happen before on other sites and even commented to my son this morning that I was worried this might happen based on the GWMT traffic trends I was seeing.

Has anyone else experienced this type of activity? I'm wondering if a certain traffic increase triggers some sort of manual review???
