Over the past few months I have heard that some people prefer to use big social media sites (Facebook, Twitter) in order to rank high and fast. Can somebody share their personal experience. Or do most people still use more traditional approaches (backlinks through forum profiles, blog commenting, articles, etc). Thanks in advance. Evgueni |

Backlinks through profiles ARE from social media sites. So I think you answered your own question. :-)

I believe you should always have a landing page (ie, personal domain/business domain), and then use *that* as the backend for all social media. Works great for me.... |

You should use everything. I would never rely only on traditional methods OR social media - use everything. A strong social media presence is really good, but it looks strange if you have no real links. Therefore - have everything. |

If you have links (fan pages, groups etc) on sites like facebook and twitter which are extremely high ranking sites, then naturally you will get better rankings and traffic. Always remember though to never rely on one form of traffic.

Thanks for the responses so far. Has anybody actually rank high for a fairly competitive keyword using only big social media players?

| Hi, I've heard this before -- about landing pages. What is the logic behind using a landing page, rather than your actual site's page? Do you mean that you use a landing page "as a buffer," and then on that landing page, have a link to your actual site's page? And I guess using it as a buffer keeps your home page safe?

| A great way to get good back links I found was to pay for software called SENukeX it automatically submits back links throughout the web to your site, you need more then facebook, twitter ect. Sadly it is very expensive but there are people who have this software and for a fee will use it on your site. A good one to check out is: thebushtelegraph.net Hope this was helpful |

Use every method that can bring backlinks to increase your site popularity. Social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook can not rank your page quickly, they just generate traffic.

Looks like we have different opinions. Wonder if some of SEO experts can elaborate on this topic.

In my own view, I used social media sites more on driving traffic to my website. Since on most social media sites like facebook you can't get any backlinks, but you can use it as like a tool in driving traffic to your website, as well as attracting people to link to you as well.

I have a FB page ranking on page 1 which generates traffic to the main site which is #1 for the same key phrase. FB is great to build a page and blast it with low quality links. Simply go to Microworkers and buy 100 likes so that you can get a username for your page (you actually only need 25 likes to get a username but they are cheap as chips), then blast the URL. Literally ride on the back of Facebook's authority. Not sure how you'd convert the traffic directly from the page though? You'd definately be better directing the traffic from your FB page back to your own site and then monetizing your own site as you see fit. |

Yes, it is possible. However, getting a page to rank highly in the search engines takes a combination of both SEO & Social Media. Matt Cutts, has confirmed Danny Sullivan's report that Google and Bing use social signals as a ranking factor. This means that Social Media do have a significant impact on search results. In the current Google Social Search implementation, content shared by Facebook contacts receives preferential positions in the search engine results, as well as with a picture of the person who shared it. Twitter Search Engine on Bing enables you to search tweets in real-time from within the Bing search engine. And with the recent updates tweets are now in the Bing News feed, as well as a preferred treatment for content “liked” by a your Facebook and Twitter contacts. These are some of the examples which shows the clear connection between social media and the search engines. | |

By launching their new social media attempt, Google+, Google is indicating to the world that social search is their next big move. Already, if you search a keyword, and one of your friends has "+1" a site related to your search, that site will appear above all the other in the SERP even if it doesn't belong there SEOwise. Also, the social proof factor is massive as you're significantly more likely to click to see that site if your friend is vouching for it. Social media is going to be growing in importance for all of our strategies and count on it in the next major Google algorithm change. |

Doubt you'll get any miracles from it, but social media certainly helps accomplish the mission. If it works, use it. But use it as one out of many tools.

as everyone has already stated, I would not depend too much on just using the strategy but like any SEO strategy, nothing on it's own will fully work............the link building has to be organic and to orginate from various forms.............and avenues.........

Hey Iva, Are you trying to look for a shortcut and heard that social media sites might rank faster? You can definitely make your social sites rank in Google, but which keywords would you want to rank them for, and how would you convert them into leads/sales? In order to make your social site rank for the right keywords, you would still need a good off page SEO boost to let Google know what you want it to rank for. To make it on page friendly you would probably want to make your main keyword the name of the social profile, but then it wouldn't be very social friendly to build social media buzz and traffic if you're optimizing for keywords and not trying to build a good following. One thing that does kick butt is ranking videos. Plus if you embed it on your site and do what's called a 'video sitemap' you can send the traffic right to your webpage instead of youtube (which is just built for distraction and time wasting). All depends on what your end goal is. If it's just getting some first place rankings on Google, stick to what works. -Jesse |
