The real competition is the top10 results of your target keyword. I would suggest installing traffic travis to check the competition. Additionally, you should also examine their backlinks. You can use backlinkwatch. I have a whole article on my
site about keyword researching, you can check it out.

Ok i guess my traffictravis is messing few things up. Its not showing age, bl, bls, tbl data at all. It also messes title and desc tags, as im checking same keyword on google :S

And beside, i guess google adwords keyword tool provide more realistic results, or so?

This free tool gives you an idea of the competiton level for a keyword - Keyword Competition Tool

Just look at the top 10 sites on the list from that tool & run them through this -https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/mysites

See what kind of back links they have.

Here is my method for checking competition;

Once I find a keyword I am interested in I look at the top 10 results on google.

With SEOQuake (firefox plugin) you can view all pertinent site statistics. You are looking for domain age, page rank and number of backlinks.

Once you check these stats and everything appears reasonable it is time to check quality of backlinks for PR.

After you check the PR of the first 10-20 backlinks (with seoquake and YSE) you can now go to backlinkwatch. com to check for anchor text.

Simplest way to see if you can compete in a market/niche with free tools.

You can analyze in 3 ways. These are :

1. Check the top ten search results for your keyword and observe the number of backlinks of those websites.
2. Observe the number of search results for your keyword.
3. You can also use Keyword tool for checking competition.

To check real competition intitle:"keyword" is the best.

Ok great guys, thanks for anwsers. But does number of results matter at all? Like if top 10 websites are same but 1 get 100,000,000 reslults and 1 get 2,000,000,000? Or is it just top 10?

Yes it matters, the less "competing pages" the easier and faster your site will move up.

Example:

if you want to rank for the keyword penile implant surgery, and you search for it in quotes "penile implant surgery", if Google returns 50,000 results, that's good, but if Google returns 2 million results that's bad/too many competing pages.

So less is good. Just make sure your keyword has enough search volume. For me personally I make sure the keyword gets at least 2000 unique visitors a month.

Nono i mean when you search for keyword without ""s. You can get sometimes more than 1bil results, but top 10 are not strong as checked, does it matters the other 1bil?

Let me answer this question with a question:

What do you think users type in Google? Isn't what shows up then your competition?

Go and analyze the top 10 spots for keyword (without anything special around it). That's your true competition. Doesn't matter if there are 5 million websites or 50. A race against 10,000 car wrecks is easier than a race against 1 Ferrari.

There are several ways to analyze this. Check out Keyword Scout when it's released, it is a very good tool for this.

The lowest i could find was arround 70k.
