Don't worry about it - they don't make much difference anyway. They'll be getting them by spamming blogs that aren't locked down by those sites. Just work on getting your site well branded and get your customers to spread the word. You can probably find plenty of computer repair subjects to do articles and press releases from and with a little bit of video marketing and a well-optimised local business listing you should be able to beat almost anyone in your area. ![]() .edu backlinks aren't worth any more just because they're .edu backlinks, for all the reasons explained here. Quote:
![]() Think in terms of quality and relevance, and establishing a reputation for your business and your site based on quality and relevance, and don't worry about mass non-context-relevant backlinks which will have very little SEO value for you anyway. Good luck!

I'm not sure about the details in your business exactly, but if you're looking for local customers then getting on Google Places can bring in a ton of customers. Get some good reviews of your business on there and you instantly have a high spot on Google. Plus, people always want to know where the nearest laptop repair place is so they will check Google Maps.

Stay safe and in the good books with the big G. Article marketing, forum posting, blog commenting and social media marketing(youtube, facebook etc) are the best way to get backlinks. Also forgotten the Press Releases. You can outsource all this if you have the $ if not work slowly and build it up in time. |

You'll beat them much easier just by doing things the right way and using your head rather than being lazy like they are. You can get THOUSANDS of links quickly and easily just by doing a few press releases, doing a few videos, writing a few articles, hooking up with businesses and events in your area. The last thing you want to do is copy your competitors.

Hi majikz10, Good luck with your new venture buddy. You going for local work or further afield? I presume local initially as the logistics of sending/receiving laptops could be a headache. It's good to check out how your competitors do their thing, quick way to learn what's going on ![]() In addition to seo - think offline. If you are going for local work there must be some sort of government run computer/internet course near to you, (they're all over the place especially in these straightened times). Go introduce yourself - hell become a volunteer! This will net you astonishing amounts of work, get some cards done and hand them out like a newbie hands out compliments! Drop me a pm to let me know how you go on |

| Noooo ... from what you say, it sounds like they're not too clued up. You can do much better than that, just by concentrating on quality and relevance. Get your name about (with a link) in contextually/geographically relevant places. |

As everyone else said, don't worry about the .edu backlinks. Chances are they're not authority sites and therefore won't help them out at all. Keep building up your site with regularly updated original content and don't forget to engage your visitors!

Backlinks are important. It's voting system. Get some edu and gov backlinks because they will give your website more importance in G's eyes. I have one month old website with only eight backlins and have already PR 1 (one of the backlinks is edu and is related to my topic!). Just pay someone for few RELATED edu or gov backlinks and then focus on your content and internal linking. |

Beyond whether or not to worry about .edu backlinks, why are you worried about backlinks? If you're just starting this business, I'd do the local (instant) SEO, but skip other aspects of SEO because it's such a long-term strategy. Instead, do some highly targeted offline marketing, maybe some smart, small-scale PPC. Something that brings in customers, puts money in your pocket, and can generate good testimonials that will help you sell more later.
