I was always wondering if Google really makes that much of a difference between plural and singular.

It seems to be pretty smart with its auto corrections and sometimes it also comes up with synonyms. But I guess if you optimized for the plural, it would rank that higher.

That needs some experimentation!

I agree. Though me, I usually target non-plural but still ranks on the plural form of the keyword as well. And usually, plural forms have a higher competition level.

Yes, it is consider two different keywords..One is the singular form and the other one is the plural form..

Not necessarily. Ther are a lot of opposite cases, for Example:

best diet --> 18100 - Exact global searches
best diets --> 8100 - - Exact global searches

I think it's ultimately to do with what your site is actually promoting - if it's a review site for multiple products - then plural may be better, if you promote a specific product (e.g., particulra weight loss diet), then you may be better off with single.

Try to check it using keyword tools like Google AdWord tool and you will see the difference between them.

Though there are some singular keywords that have higher global monthly searches than plural.

ex, casino - 20,400,000
casinos - 6,120,000

But again, they are considered as different keywords.
