Absolutely! In fact, one of my newer sites went from a PR 0 to a PR 1 in about 2 months with consistent linking with articles (not zilliions, but about 10 good articles), directories and forum postings within the site niche. This was before the recent Panda update, though.

Still, in my opinion, backlinks are definitely important. And, as stated elsewhere in these forums, it is something you have to work at on an ongoing basis, because you will find that you will both gain and lose links over time.

It's just the nature of the beast.

Depends on where you do your backlinking. I have paid for thousands of backlinks with little results, yet relevant backlinks I create myself have provided a much greater return.

i cannot understand why you have doubt on backlinks? if backlink is not useful, what can do well for online marketing?
i think maybe you think it cost too much time? or it can not provide you very obvious effect? or you can not find ways to get enough backlinks? no matter what, we can not ignore the importance of backlinks.

You may try to experiment yourself. I've been told to build more backlinks in order to increase my traffic and I need more time to research the right link to link back to my website. Otherwise, I can simply link to any site I want and that doesn't show any traffic. I will yes, it is important.

I have a bunch of crappy MFA sites that earn 5-40 bucks a month with top google rankings that only got their rankings after I left them alone for a few months (was burnt out on IM). All of them had some backlinks but none of them had great backlinks.
