Default Has anyone ever figured out what makes sites trigger a Google filter?

By Google filter, I mean when all of your pages drop severely, down to the bowels of Google for every keyword. Sometimes the keywords stop ranking for the proper page, too. It's an automatic filter, not a manual penalty, and 99% of the time it will correct itself. I don't think this is what people refer to as a "Google dance" because the entire site drops most of the time.

I've had this happen to almost every one of my sites, and for the life of me I can't figure out what causes it to happen. I'm under the impression that it has something to do with backlinks, because it the sites will usually recover, but I can't understand what it is that causes it in the first place.

Anyone know what's up with this phenomenon?

"Keep moving forward."
