Default Thoughts on Hostgator?

Hey all.

Looking for a new Host and hear hear alot of talk about hostgator. Are they good? Mainly looking to host adsense minisites with a small amount of traffic. My main concern in uptime.

I use the baby plan which gives you unlimited addon domains for 6 or 7 dollars.

haven't had any issues as of yet

Hostgator's been pretty good in terms of uptime in the couple of years I've had with it. I'd advise against GoDaddy, their interface is non-standard and not intuitive for anyone used to a typical CPanel.

Re the baby plan: it's good initially but as soon as you start to get any signiifcant amount of traffic you'll need to upgrade.

Does too much traffic slow it down then?

I've been using Hostgator for years and found them to be a good host. Their support desk have always been helpful when I needed them. Also, their hosting packages includes Cpanel where some other hosts, ie Godaddy, do not in their hosting plans.

As per SEO think of view you should choose a hosting service provider which gives you better speed, reputed, and categorize c classes = Godaddy

Been using them since 2007 and could count the issues that have ever came up on one hand. Support is top notch and always there when you need them. Uptime is excellent as well.

I also hear that a lot of people use BlueHost and love it. I've just been with Hostgator so long and things are always good, so I've never left them and don't plan on it anytime soon.

Sorry I don't have any direct experience with them. But from reviews I could find that they seems to be good if you have simple sites to host. Just search for reviews here and in webhostingtalk. There are lots of reviews regarding hostgator. Hope this helps.

Yes Hostgator is awesome!

They've cleaned up my mess more than once (lol), the live 24/7 support is GREAT!

I doubt I'll ever switch host anytime soon.

If you need to buy a domain, buy the domain at Namecheap, it's cheaper than HG.

I've also been looking at Hostgator and just had a chat with sales. I was disappointed with a guy called Jose who couldn't answer basic questions. I am thinking of going with the Baby plan monthly for now. I wanted to know what type of traffic it could cope with: Jose said "unlimited" to which i replied: "If it was unlimited, they why does anyone bother with more expensive VPS plans". Anyway, left without any questions answered. I want to host 5 wordpress blogs - monetised, and flip a few from this account too. Cpanel sounds very user-friendly and universal.
Does anybody know what happens if you upgrade to say VPS or business - do they move all your sites automatically or must i ftp everything to new plan?
I am also a newbie - fast learner though.
Cheers

I love hostgator, their uptime is superb, site load time is great, support is great. However, you might want to go with their sister site seohosting.com (same great service) if you are looking for C class IP diversity.

I upgraded to VPS, but was dissapointed that they couldn't host my sites on different C class IP address (I just assumed that was a given), so I had to change to seohosting.com and I am super happy with that. I am not sure how IP diversity works on reseller accouny or a dedicated server as I have never used either.

They will move the sites for you free of charge, you don't need to do anything.

In my experience, they are reliable but for small websites. I had a web that had 20k visits in a couple hours, and they kicked me out :P

But normally your webs won't have that much surge of a traffic :P

I had 200 000 vists a day on hostgator when doing adult websites
Never kicked me out
When the number 1 adult website links to you that is how many vists you get
Pulled something like 40gigs data in a day
It is the resources you use up via scrpts that is the trouble
There is a moniter on your lefthand side in cpanel on hostgator that warns you

24/7 toll-free phone support can come in handy, and I do mean 24/7 even holidays. I've closed my account with other webhosts because they almost seem to shut down for the holidays, your site can go down at anytime. Maybe it's a little more expensive, but outstanding support.

I'm using bluehost for two years and it's very good and cheap. For 6$-7$/month you get unlimited disk space, unimited parked domains, unlimited emails, 200 MYSQL databases, lot's of free aplications (install with 1-2 clicks) like wordpress, phpbb, magento, zenchart and a lot more and their customer support service is great .

All you satisfied Hostgator folks:

I know there is downtime with every host, what is worst downtime you have ever experienced with Hostgator? And how many times?

The host I am using has been down for about 4 hours today. This happens about every 3-4 months or so. This seems very excessive to me and I am wondering what your experiences are.

Thanks

If you get a lot of traffic you may run into some issues with long running scripts.

The tech guys help told me about a cache plugin for wordpress that helped me fix the issue and get back on hostgators good site.

The tech support has been proactive and very helpful.

Hostgator is the best.. easy accessible cpanel..

Dont use godaddy hosting.. Its the worst hosting I ever encountered, not to mentioned the control panel theme sucks. and it takes a very long time to load when navigating.. no chat support, Doesn't have free built in app for CMS freeware installer (I think you need to buy it). I encountered almost all of the control panel. and I would say dont used godaddy, your programmer might leave you.

Another vote for Hostgator.

Have had to use their tech support a couple of times over the years and they've handled it fast regardless of time of day (I'm based in UK so I can be online when it's the middle of the night).

Wordpress - one site had issues and they suggested the cache. They're proactive and because they handle so many sites it's likely they'll have met any problem you might hit before.

I was on Godaddy for a while; I hated it. Tons of downtime, and at the time I was running a large retail site, so that wasn't good. I only ONLY recommend them for domain purchase.

I was on Hostgator for a while; absolutely loved it. Great support, zero downtime, it treated me well.

Currently I'm using Meteorpages as my host. They're definitely my favorite so far; decent prices on domain names, great prices on hosting, my websites have never loaded faster, and I haven't had a single hiccup in downtime. Great support too. Anyways, they win my vote.

They don't have problems with wordpress sites, they have problem with scripts or plugin that run to long and use too much cpu on a shared machine.

My wordpress site was getting tons of pages views per day and the plugins where taking too long to load. The caching plugin solved the issue and got the site working again.

I too have used hostgator for years...they are very good, they have 24/7 live chat, phone etc... help and active forums. They're also by far the largest shared host in the world. They give you a 10 day grace period on being late on monthly hosting bill and you can most likely get your first month entirely free(google hostgator coupan). You also get free adsense, google, yahoo advertising stuff in your account, can have unlimited domains, unlimited emails etc etc... They also own a VOIP company so you can get a pretty cheap 1800 number through them. One thing you should realize is the shared plans aren't built for high end type sites,i've had indepth conversation with a tech there, if you exceed 25% of the cpu/mem for a period of time you can get suspended. That seems to be pretty difficult but a crappy/bugged script maybe able to pull it.There's also a few limits on the type of sites you can host there, like no imageshack clones, don't think they let gambling, etc... Also 250k is limit on files.

Default Re: Thoughts on Hostgator?

Hostgaotr is used, already hosted 25 sites (all of them are in wordpress) and working fine from last 6 months.

I won't recommend Bluehost (they will add hidden robots.txt and block your website on search engines). Never use fatcow because fatcow sucks, read this review. Never used cpwebhosting, read cpwebhosting reviews.

For mini-sites I'm sure you will be just fine.

However for anything a bit more complex (e.g.: even a Wordpress site with more intricate plugins or systems), then you'll be out of luck, their PHP memory is terrible and guess what they'll say if you ask them to increase it: "Tough luck.".

I went with a managed VPS instead. So much faster, and I set it just the way I need it. If my needs change, then I can ask them to upgrade a component and BAM!

I've been using HG for a couple of years and have been thrilled. I've noticed almost no downtime and the support team is awesome.

I had some wordpress sites get hacked and Hostgator had some advanced tech people on staff who completely fixed my sites. Pretty impressive.
