1st Position with No Backlinks

Two sites that I've recently come across (groomweddingspeech.org & flipvideoreviews.com) are ranked #1 on google for their main keywords (groom wedding speech & flip video reviews) with very few backlinks (< 30). The flip video reviews site actually has only 1.

How do these sites do it? I've done the same with my sites (got an exact match domain, used LSI keywords, made sure kw has very low competition, had kw in alt tags, etc), but they're still sitting at #5-8 on the first page. I've even built some links but that hasn't had any effect on my rankings.
Is there some other secret on-page seo factor that I don't know about?

Extremely low competition helps easily ranking like that. If they have a lot of keyword targeted content or a single high pr backlink it could count for a lot.

geekdout: True, but not the keyword "groom wedding speech", everyone and their mother is trying to rank for this keyword, so competition as of right now is very strong, and yet groomweddingspeech.org still dominates with very little back links.

You have to make sure your site is SEO friendly, as well as getting links directed to your site. Make sure your title, description, header and URL has your keyword in them for better SEO results.

Also try looking into link pyramids to get better results for your seo

For on-page seo make sure your keyword is in the title, meta description, meta keyword, alt/title text of images, domain name if possible, throughout your site content, h1/h2/h3 tags, bold/underline/italicize keyword if possible within the content. Make sure you optimize the URL structure for your site with /%postname%/ or /%category%/%postname%/ if you use WordPress. Also make sure you optimize your site for speed by adding gzip compression and enable leverage browser caching. The speed of your site is now a ranking factor. Make sure your website doesn't have any broken links and if they do have 301 redirects wherever possible or leave the 404 pages there because the search engines will eventually de-index them. You can also excel the de-indexing of the search engines by adding those 404 pages to the robots.txt and disallowing the indexing of them. Once this is done do internal linking for your sites. When this is done start doing link-building for the site. There is so much on link-building that it is to much to cover, but there is a start.

2# on google is pr 5
3# on google is pr 7

groomweddingspeech.org is George Brown's example Google Sniper 1 site.

It's been around since 2009 and is PR1. It actually has quite a few backlinks if you check the MajesticSEO data (over 370 backlinks)

Similar story for flipvideoreviews.com, been around since 2008 and has over 170 backlinks.

Ah I was checking for backlinks on backlink watch, which takes data from yahoo site explorer, which doesn't show all the backlinks of a site. I guess I should use MajesticSEO next time.

The exact match domain also helps with the ranking..

You still can outrank these sites pretty easily if they only have a handful of links..

They are ranking because of two factors .
1- Exact match domain
2- Domain Age
If you want to beat them do more backlinking and you will be on the top soon

Ranking for keyword are depend on information and matching word to query. As people enter words and which site have exact matching or its around keyword with meaningful and fresh information will show on top position with highlighted words.

It could be because of following reasons:

1. Links are from HIGH PR or .edu backlinks
2. keywords have lesser competition
3. the SEO tool which you have used is showing incorrect count for BACKLINKS.

These sites have been online for some time and also the links that search engines show are not actually the correct number that they take into account for ranking the webpages they link to.

Also, the domains have the keywords in their domain names which is huge bonus.
