If you really need to rank high in google you have to gather information about the high ranking website similar to your niche. Find out the keywords they use in the title tag, the Number of links containing keywords in the link text, the type of websites they get backlinks from and their pagrank. Just try and do the same as with the high ranking sites that’re similar to your keywords and in no time you too will find your site at first page of google. |

Yeah I agree on doing the SEO research before actually deciding on a keyword or product is much better. I have made the mistake of not doing the research many times |

Another thing you have to determine along with the amount of back-links your competitors have is the anchor text they use with those back-links.
