Default Will I be Punished?

Thinking of changing keywords from my website. I am considering changing 3 of them with other more popular keywords. My question is will google punish me for changing my keywords? I am ranked 11th right now but I want to optimise it better. Made the mistake as a newbie to pick the wrong ones but I have learned my lesson now!

You wont be punished, but you will obviously lose traffic from your current keywords.

Do you have to change your keywords or is there any way that you can incorporate your new keywords into your site while still keeping the old ones, that way you will still keep your ranking for the old ones as you build up your new ones

Thanks for the help. Yes it is a celtic top

I want to change keywords the ones I currently have are not ideal. Some are not searched for and others I won't be able to rank for due to other competition. I haven't really optimised for these keywords yet as such so I am thinking it won't do to much damage.

If your links are built with the previous keyword, and you build new links with a new keyword, then no.

If your SEO is strictly onsite, then you may lose the current ratings you have, but not the new ones you get.

When doing link building for SEO, it is actually to your benefit to target a number of keyword phrases in your anchor text, rather than just one or two.

Google prefers to see a variety of keywords in the anchor text for a particular website, because that looks more "natural" to them.

"Natural Links" means that links were created by people recommending your site, instead of you creating your own links. And left to the mechanics of the community-at-large, people will use a variety of words in the anchor text links for your website.

well my main keyword is beginners golf which is ranked at 11. This is not one of the keywords I want to change though. The keywords I want to change are not ranked according to Traffic travis.

Thanks for that tpw that is something which I didn't know and I had been using my main keyword consistently. Now I know to mix it up.

You may lose ranking for existing keywords in the next week or so but will start ranking better for your other keywords. Be sure to start building links using your new set of keywords as anchor text.

If you picked the wrong ones, how would you lose by Google if you change the keywords you're targeting? The ones you ranked for weren't working anyway, if I understand you correctly.

No this wont be an issue. Just change the keyword you need to change and do some backlinking with your new anchor text. You will most likely rank for both if you have already made anchor text backlinks to your original keyword even though the word isn't on your site.

i also think you'd better ADD new ones, but not REPLACE the old ones. in this way, you can keep you current ranking position and maybe get extra traffic.
if you just replace the old ones with new keywords, you will meet the risk of ranking jumping or a sudden drop. it all hard to say.

This is the exact thing that happened to me. I found it not worth it to continue with the keyword so I switched. I too was at the 11-20th spot but I found that even if I was #1, I wouldn't be able to expect much from it.
Switching was a really good decision for me, but because it's a more competitive keyword, it is taking a little more time and a lot more work to move it up in the serps...but this time it will be worth it. (i hope)
