Hello, I'm pretty new to this forum but have learned a ton already and cant say thanks enough to everyone who's posted so much useful info. Anyways, I have a quick one I'm hoping someone could answer for me. I have two websites which over the last year I have optimized for a certain long tail keyword (each site is optimized for its own 3 word long tail word keyword). One of the sites, currently ranked #1 in google and has been for months (also checked scroogle.org and we're showing #1 there as well), has 13,000,000 exact match global monthly searches stated by the Google Adwords Keyword tool. My question is, the site gets only about 50 unique visitors a day and based on the search volume I was expecting it to get more. Even if they were just bounces I'd expect by the sheer number of queries it would get more than it does. My other site, has a GMS showing 1,800,000 and I'm ranked #3 and that one gets about 2 uniques a day which seems outrageously low. I know I must be missing something here so I'm hoping someone can shed some light on what's going on here and why the incoming traffic doesn't seem to correspond my ranking in google and the GMS showing in the Adwords keyword tool. Thanks in advance! -Eric |

The search volume sounds unusually high to me, but if it's exact like you say two things come to mind. If you're logged into your Google account when determining your position try logging out first or use a rankchecking tool or service. Google customizes your search results and gives you your preferences. Or try taking a look at the local search trends graph. Google averages the previous 12 months to come up with the monthly average. For example try doing a search for 2010, and you'll see what I mean. Here's an old click distribution profile (it's old but close enough): How Much Money is a Top Google Ranking Worth to Your Business? |

Are you absolutely sure you are looking at the exact monthly search figures? Even popular keywords like "car insurance" (6,100,000 GMS) and "dog training" (1,500,000 GMS) are nowhere near your 13 million GMS. What's the keyword you are using? |

You might be ranked for the exact match keyword. Go to the left column of the keyword tool and check "exact match" and un-check "broad". This should solve your problem.

Thanks a lot everyone for the responses. I'm embarrassed to say that yes it was the broad match I was looking at and after checking the 'exact match' it was only 5400 which explains the traffic I'm seeing. I can't believe after all this time I missed that. Thanks again for the help.
