Default Lost Organic Rankings

In April, 2011, a customer's organic rankings, which were once very good, were almost completely lost on all keywords. This is having a strong impact on the affiliate program that he sold for me.

This is clearly a penalty situation. Some people have told me that most penalties are for 6 months. Is this accurate?

How can I determine what caused this problem? Is it possible to talk to Google?

Impossible to say what happened without knowing more information such as being able to see the website, how backlinks were being created and all that.
