Hey guys, I thought that would ask that questions because I think many people here are wondering it each and every day. When it comes to SEO, what is the worst thing that someone can do to a website to hurt their rankings? I'm talking about getting knocked out of rankings and even deindexed. The reason for my question here is that I still see so many of my clients do stupid stuff such as putting 10,000 links within the footer of the site. I even saw one of my client have his site with dozens of greyed out keywords within their site's footer so the visitor wouldn't be able to see it but bots would. Therefore, in order to help people avoid mistakes, what do you think is the worst thing anyone can do to a website when it comes to SEO, in today's word, after the panda update? Thanks for all of your comments in advance. |

I think the worst thing you can do is try to force a new site into a position it has not earned. Sites need to age and grow gradually in rank over time. That's the normal scheme of things online. So many site owners slam backlinks and post useless articles (poorly written piles of claptrap) and try to push a site into a good ranking. Moving a site up in rank in a way that will keep it ranked means taking the time and patience to do things the best way - not the fastest way. kay |

Great point Kay. I get that quite often. The business owner doesn't have a site or has one and it's really bad and they want to be ranked on page one on Google like "yesterday." Peter |

IMO the worst thing you could do is use an old school "black hat" SEO technique, like keyword stuffing or cloaking. That could get you yanked from the results in a heartbeat. The worst thing you could "unintentionally" do is link to an awful website. I had a website suddenly drop in the rankings and discovered it was because there was a link in the forum going out to an adult site that was spamming all over the web. After removing the link the website immediately moved back up after being re-indexed. |

One thing I see time and again, that many people either fail to realize or simply disregard, is the use of a trademarked term in their domain name. It might help with initial SE placement, due to it being part of a popular search term but, in the long run, it could cost you months or even years of hard work when the trademark owner demands and gets possession of your domain. It's not the kind of fight you can win. If I were a trademark owner who knew someone held a domain containing my mark and it was obviously being worked on to rank well, I'd probably just wait and watch it until it got to a solid position, then I'd pounce. Why do all the hard work myself? ![]() It's a chance some people are willing to take and I'll even admit to having done it myself. It is, however, a gamble. |

I think the worst thing you can do to a new site is start it out without any kind of on page SEO knowledge.

This is a really broad subject, but probably not use it. You can find a use for any type of website, no matter what the niche is. I would rather do a niche horribly then not do it at all, you know?

I'd use a really old cloaking system that is well known to Google. Pretty much any BH stuff is bad when it comes to SEO. Yes, you can get some really good short term gains but Google isn't usually too far behind and when they do catch up we get things like the "Panda" update and every other update you can name. There is one good thing from this though - if you can write a short report you can create a neat little info product about how to avoid/recover the latest Google update and sell it for a low price. Everyone wants to know how to avoid the wrath of Google. |

Use stolen content. Build xrumer links to a brand new site. Not properly optimize your site for the search engines. You have no idea how many people have only God knows what in their title tag--and then are like "Why doesn't Google LOVE me?!" There are probably a billion other things you can do wrong. I'd rather focus on the things to do right... because its a much shorter list. |

That's some good stuff here guys. I think there'll be some people that will benefit from it. You know, I get amazed something at some of the techniques and SEO strategies some people still use to this day. Sometimes, knowing how to avoid doing wrong stuff can really save your butt. Peter |

The worst thing you could possibly do is not properly optimise your on-site SEO. It has a huge part to play in your rankings, not as much as back linking, but you better believe that a website not properly optimised will not rank as well as it could.

100% flash sites, will never rank, unless they pull data from an xml file (which most don't know how).

. I find alot of small businesses ask me why their website(s) isn't ranking. I just want to slap them... That's like putting a billboard up with nothing but Braille on it, kinda pointless right?Beyond that, the worst thing you can do is buy a domain that has nothing to do with your content. It's unbelievably hard to get a person's name to rank in a competitive field when their Domain and page URLs don't CLEARLY state that this site has information on "Kitty Litter Cookies" if that's what they're going for. StephaniaMcUseless.com/products.aspx?id=734 or StephaniesKittyCookies.com/products/734-Kitty-Litter-Cookies which one screams at the search engines better? | |
