Default Ideal # of Keywords for PPC Campaign

I've always been running PPC adwords campaigns for my site and never really drilled down on how to get the most bang for buck. I use auto placements for ease and convenience due to lack of time for manual placements. I currently have 168 keywords in my campaign and don't seem to be getting enough impressions...is this too many keywords and should I narrow it down?

Thanks,
Kelly

Use manual placement. No keywords. If you want to have a profitable campaign, put in the time. The easy way can cost you money.

Adwords only looks at first 50 keywords if you do go that way. They also have to be very tightly themed. This means you only really need a handful to a dozen keywords. If not, you are not helping the system along and confusing it, another reason to use manual placement on sites that would be more likely interested in your offer.

Don't go for tonnes of impressions, go for quality clicks. Impressions mean little. You can have as many or more quality clicks for a lot less impressions.

Hi Kelly,

I was lucky enough when I first started with PPC I had two consultants to depend on. Both said you want only a few dozen keywords in each Ad Group. I personally recommend less than 50. Of course I think the better you are at theming Ad Groups and really drilling down into long tail keywords the easier it is to move from say 100's or even 1000's of keywords to just a handful.

For the content network, 50 is the maximum as they do ignore anything over 50.

They create an adgroup theme based on the first 50 keywords then show your ads on the sites that have the same theme in their content network.

There is a technique I use on the content network that involves one keyword per adgroup and letting them optimize it. Works very well if you know what you're doing.
