Supposedly, Google only passes pagerank through "dofollow" links. That said, there has been some skepticism about this lately. Other search engines may or may not do similar things.

The simple way to use this is to "nofollow" links on your website that go to non money generating pages, like your contact us page, privacy policy, etc. Otherwise you are wasting link juice on pages that you don't need to rank.

With that being said, I have seen increases in my ranking by getting "nofollow" links from other webistes. So whether the "nofollow" is really used or how much it is factored into rankings is up for debate.

Hi rich,

Nofollow attribute - tells Google to pretty much ignore the links and not give them any credit or value (you should avoid building nofollow links, other than for diversity).

Dofollow attribute - tells Google that the page containing this link is giving 'a vote' to the page the link points to, and therefore gives appropriate credit to that link.

Anchor text - When you are building a link, its HTML code looks something like this:

<a href="url">Anchor Text</a>

The anchor text of the backlink lets Google know what keyword you are trying to rank your page for.

Kind Regards,
Zannix

Josh, that's a pretty decent wrapup of the whole notion. Good link...

Zannix, there is no such thing as "dofollow", only the absence of "nofollow". While putting 'rel=dofollow' in your link code won't break your site, it add any value. You would have exactly the same effect if you added 'rel=AuntMabel' to your link code.

The only time a "DoFollow" attribute means anything is when one is selling links to the ignorant.

In my experience anchor text used in link building has helped me rank for certain keywords that I'm targeting. Just remember to switch it up and not use the same keyword in 2,500 links on 2,500 different websites because this could trigger red flags and result in a negative effect from certain search engines like google.

Agree, I tend to follow a 30 - 30 - 40% rule with anchor text i.e. 30 % targeted keyword/phrase, 30% related keywords (think LSI) and 40% generic anchors e.g. Click here, visit this site, new report etc.

John, you're right, there is no actual dofollow attribute, but I think the OP got my point anyway, don't you?

nofollow backlinks : YOur webpage does not get any credit for backlinking, but many search engines still follow them for retreiving valuable content.
dofollow : Your webpage gets credit for backlinking and search engines crawl these backlinks for retreiving vbaluable content
Anchor text : these are used to link the pages using keywords... other purpose of placing backlinks is helping the reader in referring other relevant pages.

It sounds like he did, but that 'dofollow' thing is very common and a lot of people waste hours of time looking for 'dofollow' blogs. At the same time, they ignore traffic opportunities from 'nofollow' blogs because they use a tag that may or may not actually mean anything.

Reading back what I wrote, what was meant as a simple clarification sounded like a dig at you. That was not my intention. I'm sorry if you took it that way.

After posting, I was looking through some of the SEO stuff in my digital library, and there's a distinct possibility that 'nofollow' may work as advertised within your own site but not for outbound links. No one knows for sure, though.

Yeah, I think it's even less clear how Yahoo / Bing handle nofollow links.
