First page ranking on G, but very low traffic

I really depressed seeing the low traffic to my site that I was not expected before creating my site. I am optimizing my site for a gaming keyword that have exact 74000 global search volume and 18000 US local search volume. Currently my site is ranking on 6th position for that keywords in Google.com. But I am only getting 10-20 daily visitors daily from that keywords. According to the 18000 monthly visitors, daily 600 people search for the keyword and I am getting 3% of traffic from that keywords. So I want to know that 3% traffic is deserved for 6th position or what wrong with me.

Seeing such amount of traffic, I am going demotivated for SEO and people invest thousands of $$ in SEO for first page ranking and the top IM also believe on Goolge first page ranking for more sales or more business. I am thinking for creating more website on other niche. But even after I achieved first page ranking for a high search volume keyword I am getting low traffic, so how can I believe on other keywords that can give me good traffic.

Wow that is very odd and unfortunate. Sorry to hear that.
The only thing that i could think of is that... Possibly your keyword is dominated by a specific site on #1 spot that once people are there, they dont bother to look at the other sites.
Thats hard to word to make it make sense so ill give an example...
Lets say people search keyword "mens health".... Even if i were to grab a 6th position ranking, i dont imagine that i would get a decent percentage of the monthly searches for that keyword. People would just go to the no1 spot- menshealth.com- and stay there, and not bother to click the back button and look at the other sites in the search results.

That sounds about right. I only saw the difference when I hit #1 or #2.

Thanks for your valuable reply. Then we should take extra precaution when going to do keyword research. How will we know that a keyword in dominated by a particular website when we do keyword research?

There are MANY reasons why this could be happening. Here are a few.

1. Are you even using Google Adwords properly? that is, searching for the amount of traffic a given keyword is getting each month using proper search Match Types? There is: Broad, Exact, Phrase.
I hope you're using Exact, and not Broad. Big difference.

2. Realize that rankings vary depending on your geographic location, sometimes SIGNIFICANTLY. I am in first place on Google for my second main keyword, and even have a double listing, but only if I search via a USA server. If I search in my own country via Google.com, I am only in 4-5 place. Just because you have first page ranking in India, doesn't mean you're anywhere near that when other people in other countries search for your keyword. A good website to check your rankings in different countries is krankrank.com

3. First page doesn't mean high traffic. From my own experiences, a difference of 3rd place and 8th place made the difference in a few hundred visitors for me and considering I get about 1500 visitors a day, 3-4 hundred is a big difference.

also delete browser history and log out if you are logged in to gmail or something. Google will put a site on the first page it knows you visit alot. This stumped me at the beginning.

I think you must see whether its an exact match or not if yes then confirm search volume by using some other keyword research tools.

secondly there are some other tools which show search volume of last 60 days also so it will be helpful for you to identify real search volume.

Yes Me too am afraid was number 2 in Google on my Comp but nowhere else in the world. Until i realised this.

1. yes the search volume is exact search volume, The search volume I mentioned found after I checked on the "exact" that shown on the left side of the google keyword tool.

2. Yes you are right I checked my ranking on google.com by adding gl=US command on the URL, which show the exact results of Google US and it show 6th position ranking of my site. Even I checked the ranking by using your said site krankrank.com, it also show the 6th position.

3. What you mean in your 3rd point? Should I have to get more traffic than I am getting now?

Yes I know about that. I know that if you integrate google plus button on your site and you click on plus one button, then after login on google account your site will show on first page.

But I check my ranking after completing deleting my browser history and log out from my google account.

If you have choose the low traffic and low competition keywords. Then you can get the High Position in google and with Low Traffic. I think that please choose the right Keywords. Chosse the High Traffic volume Keywords From Google adwords and wordtracker. Use a google adwords, Forum Marketing, Article marketing for Improve the website traffic.

My keyword is not a long tail keyword, its a generic 3 phrases keyword.

I think more people will clink only position from 1#-3#. ,that is why so many people want to rank to be number one in google.i think you should do some hard work on seo, thus, it will be okay.

For the traffic, use social networking sites like facebook, twitter, myspace and many more. You have to make the fan page and write some attractive and quality blogs and articles and put your website signature in it and make many friends in it and the you can get the huge traffic for your website.

May be there are more sponsored ads on top of the organic results that eating up the traffic in addition to the top organic results or most of the users are satisfied with the top 3 or 5 results.

It can be many factors. Maybe your website description is not appealing enough.
