Default Getting traffic from highly searched Keywords with articles?

I was wondering, if articles written could possible hit the #1 spot in google for a keyword that has a large search volume, and high competition. If so, how would this be done exactly?

By doing SEO, or backlinking the article, maybe it would happen? if anyone has had any luck on doing this, or a war room post about this, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.
