Default should I register a .info domain ?

I am looking to register a new domain in a very very competitive market in the uk

the "mykeywords.info" seems to be the best option, but I have read a bit about spam sites with .info however in the uk know of one long standing site that is number one on google with a .info.

failing that I can go for a lesser word "mykeywordcost.org.uk" which I guess has more commercial intent, can anyone give me any advice on this please ?

I think you should avoid using .info if possible

They are just proven to not rank as effectively.
Because of its cheap price (it used to be free too) .info domains
Were the domains of spammers. Not all .info are bad... Many people will argue that it makes no difference to your domain. However, when entering a really competitive niche, i think using a .info domain could have some effect on how fast you move up in the serps.

This is absolutely false. There is no proof they do not rank as effectively. In fact, you can find plenty of proof of just the opposite.

The TLD does not make a difference for SEO.

yes, but i do find that .info still okay, some people say it is cheaper, but through go daddy, after the first year, the price is the same...

yeh, many people believe more on .com , so it sound reasonable to also have .com domain...

I see your point, and there was already plenty debate that TLD does not matter. But the thing that makes me avoid using them is that they have had some negative history with SEO in the past, which is why I think the debate still exists today.

I guess it's user preference though. I personally would not feel comfortable with it...whereas others seem to have seen success with it.
I have never used a .info, but from what i've read...people who have been successful ranking a .info stated that it seem to take a lot more backlinks and more time for it to move up.

it is like the .co.cc domain, due to many people use it as a spam machine, it's all been banned.

so, i like to think that using .info domain had a negative impact to the eyes of the visitor but not Google.. :-)

I agree with most of the posters, if you can't get the .com, go with the .info. This is a problem that'll affect us more and more, simply because all the good .com's are taken.

.info can jump to top of Google rank
i think it depend on your "quality" of your site more than "dot"

Here's the deal. Google ranks pages PERIOD!
However .com .net. .org get an exact match URL bump which does help quite a bit. None the less G ranks pages.

If you use a .info you will gain the "all in" benefits such as all in title, all in url ect...

You will not get the ex Match bump but neither does any other sub page on the internet (internal page).

If you already have a larger site in that same niche you would likely see a better boost buy adding this as a page because of internal linking and "presence" such as PR, Auth site and internal links.

I am not talking about some little 3 to 5 page site thinking the internals will boost you much (that's nothing). But if you have a 70 to 100 pager or more in that niche it will definitely rank better as a page.

Don't believe me? Then go have somebody who knows what their doing like maybe Matt LaClear put up a page on one of his sites for an even tougher niche and spank your new .info like it owed him money.

But if you have no other choices and the niche is one you really want I would go get the .info and your keyword say it's "bigmoney" I would get bigmoneyx.com or .org and throw a few thousand links at each and see which one ranked best (decent links, not crap). That's only if you're in love with that niche and need it for some reason. Then I would feed the hunter (I. E. keep the one that ranks).
