Default Local SEO

Im about to begin offering SEO services.

Im thinking of breaking the market by going for a www.mysuburbnameseo.com domain and offering the service to people in my suburb and the sorrounds only. The benefit is that ill be the only one doing it in my suburb and one of only a few that do it in my surrounding area.

BUt, the question is. Will it work, will people pay me. My suburb has about 30,000 people in it, we are neighbours with some other much larger areas with between 50-100K people and we are about 45KM away from Melbourne which has a population of 4.07 Million.

Hi Andrei,

From the numbers that you have quoted above I think it could be a large enough pool to develop enough clients to justify the work involved.
A lot of services which you can offer are very easy ones which provide a lot of benefits to local companies... Google Local Places being the first one which comes to mind.
The big challenge is not just getting clients for optimisation projects, but more specifically, keeping them on a retainer. It's never too difficult to rank for local terms within small geographical areas so clients may be satisfied with the results very quickly and might not wish to continue paying for services because of this.
My 2 cents and best wishes if you pursue this project.

Honestly, I would recommend that you first find a "test" business to work your new found magic on.

You will not only get a great reference from a happy client, you will also get the room for error that a paying client does not allow.

Trust me when I say that "you need experience!". Even if it is local traffic you need practice and learning what works and does not work. Friends, brother-in-laws, IT person, kid across the street, etc are great opportunities for us.

What is not a great opportunity is people having a bad experience with a so called "SEO Expert". Mistakes made hurt the client by not providing the most basic of SEO returns, to the client broadcasting poor SEO experience to everyone that can listen.

I mention this because 1 happy customer can lead to multiple new clients. 1 unhappy customer can be a reputation hurdle in a smaller customer target area.

JMHO - Hope i helped

I warn you that Local SEO can be a tough market place. Nevermind that Google Places results dominate the first page, most local SEO company use hardcore telesales tactics to get their customers and steal yours. It's tough to provide an ROI to a flower shop who only makes $7 profit a sale (or similar small margin local companies) when your cost per customer acquisition is so high due to sales commission and marketing expenses.

We know this from experience as we have our own Local SEO company -- GetMeListedNow.com and GetMeListedNow.co.uk.

I suggest choosing a broader domain name and creating a local search offering page and ranking that for the demographic you are hoping to serve.

This way you can cast a broader net in your search for clients.

However, often times the best place to start is with someone you know and then if you do a good job referrals will definitely come!

So true. The best strategy is to go after professionals or practices (health, law) who`s clients see them on a continuous basis and drop $40+ per appointment. This customer who finds their site through google and books an appointment could equate to $300 or more a year.

Send me a PM if you want some help developing a targeted plan!
