I have some questions regarding picking niche's and keywords. I have read many of the blogs of the "leaders" in the industry such as Pat Flynn, the literature here, and even reviewed some of the free e-books out there.

I get the general concept... List out the stuff you have an interest in so you develop a site that you can contribute to and is fun in the process... Do keyword research, pick a niche that doesn't have alot of market penetration in terms of existing sites (and especially edu,gov,etc) but something that people are searching for.

My question is... Is it truely about finding the perfect "specific" niche in the broad topics I'm interested in or is it more about finding the "specific niche that's never been tapped?

For instance.. I have alot of IT and IT Security experience and would love to build a website about building your own PC with a video, how to and links to amazon, etc in order to make some money on the site... but is that a complete waste because of the various videos out there? Would I be better to figure out a hot toy this year for christmas, see if hottoyreviews.com is available (where hot toy is the name of the toy) and create that type of website?

I actually have an interest in building sites like this.. I see people posting their income reports making 10K-20K a month once they've been around for a while. I think that's awesome... I mean honestly I'd be happy if I make $50.00 my first 2-3 months just because of accomplishment that you built something people are using...

I'm interested to hear the feedback.. As you can tell from my profile I am new here... but i really appeciate anyone's feedback.. I can't wait to get started.. I just don't want to go down the wrong path or a niche that's penetrated to the max...

Don't aim for $50, aim sky high and work really hard and smart.
If you research on your market you may find golden nuggets.
To get those nuggets you really need to dig deep.Sometimes they
are in front of us but it takes time to realize their real worth.
So do your research.

It is important to read a wide range of opinions and tactics to cobble together what makes the most sense to you.

Do this by reading, implementing, analyzing the effects, repeat. I have researched hundreds of niches and they are all different. When you stumble on a good one, attack the hell out of it with all your focus.

The PC, IT market is notoriously difficult because of all the programming ninjas that penetrate it! I would suggest steering clear, just my opinion.

I think it would be more of a strong founded venture if the base is based on the expertise you actually have. In that sense, building an IT Security web site would be more appropriate for you that experimenting on niche which you actually have no interest or best ideas to present to online viewers. Then, from the IT Security web site, you can begin outlining topics, and from each topic delegate keywords. When you are done delegating keywords per topic on your site's outline, you can then expand your keyword link by digging deeper to find long tail keywords that are actually used by users. With these long tail keywords, you create content, promote and rank it will.

Just start building a few sites and see which ones word for you. Check your stats, click through rates and earnings. It will become clear soon enough which direction you should go.

swabby, since you asked about keywords I'm going to venture down that path. Research keywords around what you like and are good at which is IT/Security/PC building. As you research these keywords you may discover other venues related to your background, and possibly an underleveraged niche.

You may want to look and see if any of the affiliate networks have anything that you may be an expert on, again related to your IT background, that you could promote. You also may find that you are an SEO expert and don't even know it, there are lots of products to promote there.

Back to the keywords. As you know this is how many visitors will find you and cannot be overstated.
Although I do not use them YouTube videos are popular and there is one on almost every first page for any search result. You mentioned this in your question. If you promote a build your own PC YouTube video, and feature it on your site you may be able to get that traffic to covert for offers. I would check out the "build it yourself" market first, I feel the competition may be overwhelming.

You can always start with a couple sites to begin with, and see what avenue you "feel" is going to be the best, then work towards that one. Making money usually does not come at first, so fon't get discouraged if at first you don't knock it out of the park. Good luck, and read everything that you can here.
