If you're a SEO Guru, then don't read this. If you're not, and struggling to rank, then this post will help. I have been doing internet marketing for a while, and if you look through this forum you'll find so much advice about SEO about getting backlinks, on page SEO and the whole 9 yards. I'm not saying that is bad, but what I'm saying is that most of the time people get bad SEO results because they miss one vital factor. They choose the WRONG KEYWORDS. Have you been in the situation where you're wondering why you're not ranking even though you did all the right on page SEO, got all the super sexy backlinks, but still rank like ****? It's probably because you're going for keywords that are way out of your league at the moment. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you to go for keywords that hard. No, I'm saying don't do that at the START. Go for easy pickings and pick up longer tail keywords. Once your site ranks for related keywords in the market you're targeting, it's much easier for that site to rank for the super hard terms. PLUS, you'll be making money FASTER. Prior to going for longer tail keywords, I would never have been able to make money from SEO within a month or two. But now, since I targeted the RIGHT keywords, I am getting first page results within a 60 days! Here's PROOF (2 month old website making Amazon sales already) I have included this screenshot: |

Thanks for the advice, so the trick is getting the right keywords because some keywords have so much competition is virtually impossible to rank.

Proves nothing.. Of course a low competition keyword is easier to rank, but less traffic = less profit..

The screenshot proves absolutely nothing. Going for long tail keywords can be an OK strategy, but there's plenty of long tail keywords that aren't worth touching as you'll only get a very small trickle of traffic. |

Haha that's a lot of black. Anyone can rank for long tails, you may as well go for something a little more competitive and pick up all of the long tails related that that keyword as well.

Rank for longtails first example Auto parts, (short tail) Try making pages for Discount auto Parts Columbus Ohio Auto Parts delivered free Chevrolet Corvette Auto parts etc (just off the top of my head I have not researched search volume for these terms) Then point each of these pages towards the main page for Auto Parts Eventually as you rank for the long tails, and google gains respect for your site you will begin to rank higher for the short term. This is just a very quick overview of that strategy, Go Google, how to rank for longtails. Spend several hours reading the sites, the flowcharts, and watching the vids that pop up There is absolutely no way a strategy like this can be adequately explained and charted in a forum like this in an answer in a thread. You must go research this and watch the tutorials, and spend hours on it. Kw research and mapping on your site is the most important part of IM. IMO. Good kw research takes hours and hours for each site, some spend days on it, thats how important this is Am I an expert in this area? No way. I have been intensely studying it for about 3 months and I am just starting to feel like I have a grasp on how to analyze the top 10 in Google with market Samurai, ( I have only been using MS for one month)etc etc , and how to flow chart the websites and long tails etc . |

What does the screenshot prove? I see a big black image with a few numbers and red arrows on it.I have a few niche blogs based on long tail keywords that get around 2,500 searches per month (USA, exact match type in Google keyword tool). You can do keyword research manually which is both time consuming and you can make mistakes or you can use some kind of software like Micro Niche Finder or Market Samurai to find keywords that is worth trying.

He also said to start with the long tails. Get traffic in fast to start making some money and then work on the more rewarding keywords as the page and domain ages and the backlinks grow. Outwest made another good post and explained it a bit better. A long tail will contain a higher traffic short keyphrase so by going for a well selected long tail first you can build up to hit the high traffic. Long tails also are more targeted keywords. You have a better idea of the searcher's frame of mind and goal for the search. In outwest's 'auto parts' example: someone searching for 'auto parts' isn't a very motivated or educated searcher. this can be great for AdSense sites but not so for affiliate and product marketing. We already know that some of them are search for 'auto parts delivered free' so they aren't going to be interested in your site if you charge $100 or don't even deliver. If someone is after "widgets" then some are going to be looking for free blue widgets; you only have $200 red widgets for sale. That short tail traffic isn't that great after all, but it all sounds nice when just quoting traffic numbers. Speaking of traffic numbers, you can get more traffic targeting a long tail keyword you can get to #1 rank with a whole lot less search traffic than a short tail that you can only get to #6, #5, #4... If you can't get that short tail to number 1 rank than it might not even be worth targeting. I tell everyone who listens to start with a relevant long tail and add on other keywords as you move up the ranks. Outwest mentioned the importance of analysing the data yourself and by getting traffic with long tails you can get a feel for what works and what doesn't. You learn your limits with your backlinking arsenal and can make decisions based on those limits.

I don't think there are any wrong keywords. There are easy and difficult keywords, or say fast or slow keywords. you need to start with fast keywords so you see results fast, then go after the slow keywords for long term growth. This also means, you can start with low quality content, but eventually you need to put quality information/services there. IMO, all the small niche websites are not sustainable, they are just a waste of time |

I think you're totally missing the point. I am making an AMAZON site, as if I'm going to show you my keywords that I am ranking for. These are high converting product keywords. Let me ask you a question. Are you going to show me your high converting product targeted keywords for an Amazon site? If you are, let I'll gladly exchange my figures with you. The screenshot proves you can get quick rankings QUICK if you target low competition keywords FIRST. Go for bigger and harder keywords much later, AFTER you have picked off the easy pickings. So, the screenshot proves what I am talking about. QUICK RANKINGS FAST! |

That is exactly how I do it. Target the easy keywords and work your way up the ladder until you can devoted more of your time to targeting the harder keywords. Since it takes less time to rank for the easy long tail keywords, you will be able to start getting traffic quicker. Which can lead to earning money sooner rather than later. Where if it takes 3 or 4 months to rank for the harder keywords that get you the most traffic, it can take you less time to rank for more long tail keywords than can potentially get you more traffic than that single one. Yes, you can and usually do get traffic from long tail keywords while you are trying to rank for that hard one. But if you PURPOSEFULLY target the long tail ones you will rank quicker for those instead of waiting for them as you TRY and rank for the harder one. All this involves is creating a separate page for your long tailed words, and targeting your backlinks with that keyword in mind. Doing it this way will create a more stable site; if you drop in rankings for 1 or 2 keywords it won't hurt you as much because you will be getting traffic from dozens of long tail ones. -- Jeff |

I do about the same thing as OP. My root keyword is the index page, then I group about 5-10 long-tail keywords on 5-10 internal pages (all related to the root keyword). Backlink the root & internal page keywords. Repeat with another group of related internal page keywords. Internal link everything as long as it's related, |

What client is that you used to show your rankings (the screen shot)? Seemed like a simple interface to read. I would like to have access to something like that, so can you please tell us what you used.

Oh so true!! Man I can go on for days about starting my SEO ventures in the wrong way... targeting the keywords that only had tens of thousands of searches a month. It's way easier to pick the "low hanging fruit" and then working your way up with more and more difficult keywords to rank for. |

I don't necessarily disagree with the main point you are making, but it still doesn't change the fact that your screenshot proves absolutely nothing. I could quite easily post a screenshot with almost everything blacked out and claimed it "proved" that I had top rankings for any keyword. I'm not calling you a liar, but your offer of "proof" is certainly not convincing.
