Google alerts to find where backlinks are?

Hey if your using services like article ranks, seolinkvine, etc whats a good way in finding where your articles reside, once they are submitted.

So far i've been recommended google alerts and inserting a unique sentence in the article. But my articles are really spun, so not sure what to do.
