Simple Machines Finally Combating SEO

Just saw this email from the creators from the Simple Machines forum who obviously know the immense amount of forum profiles and spam that is created on their site so here is the email:
Simple Machines is proud to announce that the Simple Machines Forum project has released SMF 1.1.15 and SMF 2.0.1 security patches for the SMF community.
Critical security issues have been identified and fixed with this patch, therefore it is highly recommended to make sure you update your forums immediately!

I don't see what this really accomplishes... I mean for a long time you have always been able to disable forum profile links with SMF and you could use nofollow attribute or use MODS to help combat spam.

I don't think that they are going to find a silver bullet to defeat spam.

But it would be great to see them slow it down / combat the spam.
