Posting in Free Advertising Forums; Good or Bad?

Hi All,

I recently came upon some forums that allow free advertising of almost everything and usually some of them are getting spammed like crazy. I wanted to ask if I were to post there with a link back to my site, will my site get penalized by Google? Is there any negative or downsides to posting backlinks in such forums?

I was curious on this as well. For one I get confused as when compared to Google's stance on FFA (Free For All) sites from back in the day. Most of these advertising forums allow just about anything to be advertised. So would the search engines punish you for promoting with this technique these days?

Another thing to consider with this question is if it could hurt what is to stop someone from using it to build links to their competition.

Perhaps the search engines just devalue these links?

I mean is it really the same thing as a FFA site? Those were just pages and pages of links with anchor text.]

I am looking forward to more opinions as well!
