Default Do you target the post page or home page?

Noob here...

I have my "main" article sticky'd to the home page and then about 4 or 5 other articles below that one on the home page.

I obviously have post pages for each one.

The pages on page SEO is fine.

My primary keyword is good for that main article. Do I backlink to the home page since that article is sticky'd there or should I backlink to its post page?

Does it matter?

Please advise.

Thanks

Personally, I target the home page - but you'll be surprised sometimes and see both the home page and the post rank

Target both if you can. You can give preference to one of them, but try and throw some backlinks at the other page(s) as well.

At the very least it will help things look a bit more natural.

If me I will target both. The single page is important, but the home page is as important as that as well.

Well both ideally, go for your main keywords to the homepage and then long tails for the post, or inner pages.

Thanks guys...

I have a follow up question and didn't want to start another thread on such noobish questions...

Is it ok to start backlinking without the site being indexed?

Also, if so, how hard should I backlink? And what methods for a new site?

I realize 1000's and 1000's from all directions might be a bit much even if drip fed...so is there a general rule for a brand new site?

500? diverse links? 200?

Thoughts?

Sometimes both, but I usually just do homepage.
