Default A straightforward question: How do you increase your PR

My content-rich-travel-related website has been around for almost four years, and I keep on updating it...

It boasts thousands of indexed pages with good, original content

The domain has been PR4 for God knows how long, while the main subdomains are 'stuck' on PR1 or, maximum, PR2

What are the MOST imporant points to take care of, if you want your PR to get higher (or a certain page's PR) and is it really that important ???

Cheers, Roni

Internal linking will boost the PR of inner pages.
That and the same higher PR links that one normally gets.

But you mention subdomains. Do you really mean subdomain?

If you really mean subdomains, then subdomains are treated
as separate and not-equal domains. You can get
some benefit by inter linking the main domain, but IMHO,
not as much as internal linking inner pages.

That's why most of the time it's not good to use subdomains, but
just sub-pages.

Since they are looked upon as separate websites, you in effect
must do all SEO you would normally do to any domain. Twice the
effort, so to speak. You must get some great external backlinks.

PR is all about backlinks. I have raised many internal pages just by
internal linking. The authority passes as well, which is why wikipedia,
amazon, etc. can get #1 without any PR or backlinks.

true, internal linking is important especially with the anchor text. If that particular page is very important, you can interlink it in every page.

Basically the more quality backlinks you have pointing to your website the higher the PR is. Your homepage is a higher PR because I presume you backlink primarily to your homepage.

There was a chart somewhere I saw that gave you an estimate of how many PR links you need to make your website a certain PR. I'll try and find it for you

And I agree with the other guys, good internal linking will help pass around the link juice

Thank you for your detailed anwer Paul and, to be honest, I'm not sure I know what is the difference between subdomains and sub-pages...

To make things clearer : Let's assume my Asia-travel-website is www travelasia.com, than what I refer to as "subdomains" are : www travelasia.com/China OR www travelasia.com/India and so on... and than, underneath those "so called subdomains" there are more sub-pages, like:
www travelasia.com/China/hotels OR www travelasia.com/China/restaurants ....

Did I make myself clear ? What do you reckon ? Is internal-linking the right way for me ?

Many thanks, Roni

www.travelasia.com is actually a subdomain of travelasia.com

china.travelasia.com would be another subdomain so is japan.travelasia.com They are all subdomains of travelasia.com and treated as distinct websites

These are actually different catagories

Hi All,

I just wanted to clarify some thoughts, as they can be misleading for other readers.

First of all, even if you found such chart, you cannot rely on it as it will be based on particular website's case. The reason is that it is not just the number of links that counts, but most importantly the quality of sites and their relevancy to your site (proper use of keywords in anchor text).

In other words it will be better to have 100 links from PR5+ pages with relevant content than 1000 links from low ranked sites, poor web directories and auto approve blogs.

As for the URL issue that was mentioned, look into URL canonicalization. It is a way of choosing a preferred URL address (www or non-www). Usually it will require you to set 301 redirect, couple of minutes and your PR juice instead of being split between two domains now goes to one!

Your main index page will have the highest PR 99.9% of the time. Your sub pages will usually be couple of points back. Hope it helps!

The other thing to remember about PR is that while it can be relatively easy to get a PR4, once you start going higher than that, it gets harder and harder and harder.

When you start getting in the PR7-PR10 range, it's pretty much only authority sites you'll find and they have gazillions of links.

Google.com and Facebook are both PR10, which is what you'd expect.
