Post Best Way To Track Backlinks?

I am a newbie in SEO and I wonder what kind of tools you guys used to track your site's SEO status for example how many backlinks and keyword density etc. I would prefer free tool as I dun have much budget for startup. Is Big G analytics a good tool for newbie like me??
