Google Page Rank; Celebrity Blogger; The rest of us

I know most Internet Marketing Gurus understand that the Page Rank and legitimate and relevant backlinks to a webpage has a a HUGE factor of where a website ranks in the SERPS.

However, I am confused on something. If you are a techy following Michael Arrington (founder of TechCrunch - recently fired from Yahoo) he has started a new blog on wordpress. The post has two post, the first post being three words. This is a new domain, with only about two hundred backlinks.

How in the heck did he get a Google page rank of 3 starting out of the gates?

The only things I can see is that he's using wordpress. I'm sure that's automatically giving him a PR 3 ranking, also he's linking outward to techcrunch (a major site with a high pr) that Google Likes.

Google wants to see that you're linking out to these big sites, so that it shows you're recognizing someone else other than just shooting hundreds of links to your website.

At the same time he just got fired or "had his pen removed from his hand" as he said in his recent blog post. So it's big news for a guy of his stature to get fired from a highly rated site like tech crunch. So a lot of major websites are actually linking to him using his actual url in the anchor text UnCrunched

The domain is 3 years old - with history before that too.

I think the way wordpress is setup when you register one it is literally considered a new domain and the high PR from wordpress.com does not filter down. I could be wrong. And yea, I guess there is a LOT of high armor pointing to that domain, but isn't google telling us GOOD data is what it is about rather than backlinks? Do you see anything on that blog relevant?

Seems to me Google still loves backlinks rather than good data

You are misunderstanding what PageRank actually is. It is nothing but a measure of the quality of backlinks' 'link juice' flowing into a particular page. The domain is old so there may be backlinks from before the new owner was using the domain. There may also have been links built before the last PageRank update - which occurred in August I believe.

He has some strong links there, more than enough(naturally) to get the PR3 in such a short period. I'd say many were active before th elast update.

Ah ok, that would make a LITTLE more sense. The article I read stated it was a new domain. I guess I would have to see the relevant content on the old domain hosting.
