I've read here a guide that teaches how to build a pyramide but I unterstood that's only effective for low to medium competition keywords
so how to succeed with high competition keywords?

To achieve high rankings against competitive keywords is nothing different than ranking for a low/med keyword. You only need to be more consistent and systematic in your approach. Your preference should be quality only links from authoritative sites will help you. Your site structure should be extremely seo friendly in a way that it doesn't look like search friendly
