Search rankings differ wildy -- why?

Okay so I have a website that's ranking #5 for it's keyword in google if I do a regular google search. It's also the same position if I search it through scroogle. The same thing happens if I search it with my iphone via 3G.

BUT I get different results if I do a Market Samurai search as well as a Spyfu search. My site isn't even in the top 50 with those two. Anyone know why?

The reason for different ranking results is personalized search.

Today Google, Bing and other search engines bias their search results to tailor them to a particular user. This means two searchers looking for one and the same term might see quite different listings.

Thus, to get an unbiased picture when monitoring your ranking progress, make use of rank checking tools.

I wouldn't agree with you that the use of rank checking tools can bring any benefits. I used one programme for checking positions and it gave me only wrong results.

Similar to linkassistant, Google and Bing try to personalize results for the specific user especially on a local level (where your location actually changes how things rank); but it's not a big deal if you're looking to rank on a national level. You can try to use the Google Adpreview tool (just google it) to check for unbiased results manually (remember to make the settings as neutral as possible).

Rankings alter on a daily basis but vast changes happen due to Google dance .

Relying too much on rank checker tools might cause too much confusion about your website's ranking. You can check it manually. Clear everything that might cause personalized searching and then check your website's ranking.
