Hi, Just been having a on going debate about google and if having backlinks still help. this is what one webmaster been trying to tell me over and over again: Google made a public announcement in 2009 and twice in 2010 that backlinks (PR) do not hold any weight anymore in their SE! That means ALL backlinks, whether they are relevant or not. Now that is fact and not an opinion !!!!! I mean to me I can see spammy and link exchanges being trash in my own opinion but this should not be the case for authority sites but I would like to know my follow warriors opinion on this topic as always feedback is appreciated |

Backlinks definitely play a part. It's not the be all and end all of how they rank you on search, but it's a factor. How does your webmaster friend reckon that Google ranks websites then? More importantly, what is he trying to sell you? |

I think Google is just controlling the spammy side.. but not all. As long as it will look like natural, it will continue to have a good effect. Link is a link. It is not just for ranking, but also for traffic referral. So the rule thumb? Make the link to have natural growth, and make better contents even if you are submitting to article directory sites.

| PR is page rank in this case and he is right, G says it does not matter anymore. Backlinks and great unique content are the most important things for ranking. |

In my view quality backlinks are one of the most important aspects of SEO. But, PR doens't necessarily hold weight. It's good to have high PR, but lower PR pages outrank higher PR pages for competitive keywords all the time. Google is more concerned with relevance and quality of a page than PR. With that said, having a high PR is still a signal that a page has good backlink structure which is a good thing.

PR is the rank of a PAGE on a site - ranking (as often discussed) is where the site places in the google order.Quote:

Perhaps this webmaster is using this statement as a link bait for his company.

| Page rank and backlinks are 2 complete different things. The reason people want links from high pr sites is because high pr is typically given to authority sites meaning that that link counts much more than a link coming from a non-authority site.

No-one knows for sure how Google works. However in my experience I have found that if you make an authority site by getting the content syndicated and the "go to" places for the niches this is very effective. |

If your friend is referring to the 0-9 PageRank number seen in the Google toolbar, he's almost right. That factor doesn't have nearly the weight it did a few years ago. A backlink (a link from another site TO your site) still has some value. How much is at partly a function of the authority of the page holding the backlink. Keep in mind that the whole idea is to get human eyeballs on your pages. Preferably, human eyeballs with both control of the means to buy and the predilection to do so. |

This is what you need to get traffic from Google.
Google is, and always has, tried to convince people that if you take care of #1, then #2 and #3 will take care of themselves. But they were giving conflicting messages by publishing the PR via the toolbar. So they stopped updating it so you'd stop paying attention to it. It definitely doesn't mean that links don't matter. |
